The Gardening Year for 2015 got under way on September 11th with a very interesting talk and demonstration by the group’s resident head Gardener Fergal Fitzpatrick. The Annual General Meeting was held on the same night and the Officers elected for the coming year are as follows, Chairman, Seamus Fahy Secretary, Suzette Galbraith, Joint Treasurers, Judith Hogan and Margaret Ryan, P.R.O. Frank Sheeran and the Committee is all members of the group. The next meeting will be held on Thursday October 9 at 8.00pm in St. Canice’s Hall. Preparation for next year have started so come along to the next meeting all are welcome.
Borris in Ossory ICA Guild held its monthly meeting on Wednesday October 1, presided over by Helen Browne. A report was given on the Federation meeting which took place in Portlaoise recently. The guild will once again take part in the Team Hope Christmas Children’s Shoebox Appeal. Members are requested to collect shoe boxes and also suitable items to fill the shoeboxes. The boxes will be filled in St. Canice’s Hall on Thursday night November 6. Anyone wishing to donate items for the shoeboxes can do so by contacting any ICA member. This is a very deserving charity which provides Christmas gifts to needy children abroad who might not otherwise receive a visit from Santa Claus. Florrie Foley reported on her week at An Grianan last month and displayed the articles she made in the parchment craft class.
The guild hopes to hold a Christmas Fair/Bring and Buy Sale in St Canice’s Hall in early December.
The guest speaker at the meeting was Fergal Fitzpatrick who gave a very interesting talk on gardening. Fergal gave some valuable tips and covered all aspects of gardening including vegetable and fruit growing, flowers, shrubs and pot plants, tree pruning and sowing a lawn. He also spoke about the Gardening group which meets each month in St Canice’s Hall. He explained that it is an interactive group where everyone shares tips and advice. Members also bring along any surplus plants they may have and they also share recipes, making use of the produce from their gardens. Fergal invited anyone interested in gardening to come along to the next meeting, everyone is most welcome. The competition for the Oldest Coin was won by Pat Kelly who had an English sixpenny bit featuring Queen Victoria dated 1893, in second place was Noreen Whelan with a penny from 1898 and third was Lily Sheeran with a penny dated 1915. The raffle winners were Rosie Kealy and Anne O’Sullivan.
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday November 5 and the meeting will be at the later time of 8.30pm to facilitate members attending the Parish Mission. The competition will be a handmade Christmas tree decoration, any medium.
Thanks is extended to everyone who supported the recent Coffee Morning in Borris-in-Ossory and Coffee Evening in Knockaroo in aid of Laois Hospice. The total amount raised was €1,080.
Dancing for Fun with Maureen Culleton takes place each Thursday in St Canice’s Hall, Borris in Ossory from 2pm-4pm. All are welcome.

All Parents/Guardians who wish their child to celebrate First Confession and First Communion in 2015 are requested to attend a meeting in Borris-in-Ossory Church on this Tuesday October 7 at 7.30 p.m. At that meeting Fr Robinson will give a talk to all Parents/Guardians of First Communicants from Killadooley and Borris-in-Ossory. Enrolment for First Communicants from both Killadooley and Borris-in-Ossory schools will take place on next Saturday 11 October at 7 p.m. Mass in Borris-in-Ossory
The parish Mission will take place on the first week of November. All members of Borris in Ossory choir are requested to attend a meeting to prepare for Mission on Wednesday October 15 at 7.30 p.m. in Borris-in-Ossory Church.
Weekday Mass takes place each morning in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory at 9am. There is a Eucharistic Service in Killasmeestia Church on Thursdays at 10am and in Knockaroo Church on Tuesdays at 2.30pm. (NOTE: Change of time)
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed for the winter months. Adoration takes place each Tuesday in St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory from 9.15am to 3pm. Adoration takes place in Killasmeestia Church on Thursdays from 10am to11am and in Knockaroo Church on Tuesdays between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. (NOTE: Change of time). Anyone is welcome to come along and spend some time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
As part of Mental Health Week Alison Sweeney, Music Therapist will deliver interactive workshops, in St Cancie’s Hall from 3pm – 6pm on Friday the 10th of October.
