SOCIAL SERVICES AGM
The AGM of Borris in Ossory Social Services Committee took place in St Canice’s Hall on Wednesday May 9, presided over by Marian Carey. Miss Mary Delaney, HSE Portlaoise was welcomed to the meeting. A very detailed report of last year’s activities was given by the secretary Sr Regina. The treasurer Anne O’Brien reported on the finances of the committee. Mary Delaney congratulated Borris in Ossory Social Services on all the work they do in the community and said that they provide a very worthwhile service.
Election of officers then took place and the following officers were elected for the coming year: chairperson Marian Carey, vice-chairperson Mary Sheeran, hon. secretary Sr Regina Delaney, asst. secretary Stella Kealy, hon. treasurer Anne O’Brien, Meals on Wheels co-ordinator Noreen Hanrahan, PRO Lily Sheeran/Helen Kavanagh, bingo organiser Tommy Whelan, chiropody co-ordinator Lily Sheeran. Committee members Noreen Whelan, Joan Kirwan, Frances Coyne, Rose Kealy, Pat Kelly, Eileen Daly, Michelle Foyle, Rose Ryan and Josie Keenan.
This year’s outing was discussed and it is hoped to visit Glenstall Abbey and Bunratty Castle, the date to be confirmed in the near future. The annual church gate collection was also discussed and this will be taken up at all churches in the parish on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday July 7 and 8.
The Midlands Charity Cycle Tour takes place on this Saturday and Sunday 19 and 20 May, in aid of Spina Bifida and Pieta House Suicide Awareness (Roscrea Branch). On Saturday the tour will set off for Athlone taking in Mountrath, Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Tullamore and will return to Borris-In-Ossory on Sunday through Ferbane, Cloghan, Birr and Roscrea. Sponsorship cards are currently being filled by all cyclists and all support will be gratefully received.
YOUTH EXAM MASS
The annual youth mass for all students in the parish who are preparing for examinations will take place in St Canice’s Church on Saturday evening May 19 at 7pm.
Borris-in-Ossory Youth Club recently completed a 5km fun run/walk at Kilkenny Castle. This event was organised in association with Ossory Youth and Youth Work Ireland and was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Youth Work Ireland. This event was also a fundraiser for Borris-in-Ossory Youth Club. Sincere thanks is extended to all who donated to the sponsorship cards. Club meeting continues this Friday evening at St Canice’s Hall from 7.30 to 9.30pm.
TIDY TOWNS AGM
The AGM of Borris-in-Ossory Tidy Towns committee will take place on Thursday May 17 at 8pm in St Canice’s Hall. New members are welcome. Due to the downturn in the economy finances low. Thanks to donations made by local organisations and residents, the committee is just about able to carry out projects in the village.
The last monthly meeting of Borris in Ossory ICA Guild took place on Wednesday May 2, presided over by Helen Kavanagh. A vote of sympathy was passed with one of the members Una Dooley on the recent death of her husband Micheal. Noreen Whelan was congratulated on the birth of her new grandson and Anna and Seamus Costigan were congratulated on the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. A report was given on the federation AGM held in Arles and congratulations were extended to the new federation president Betty Gorman. Congratulations were also extended to Kathleen Gorman who has been elected as ICA regional president. A report was given on the ICA annual dinner dance which took place in the Gandon Inn recently. The guild will be represented at Laois Week in An Grianan which will be held from Monday June 11 to Friday June 15. Members were informed about the forthcoming AGM of the association which takes place in the County Arms Hotel, Birr on Saturday May 26. The guild’s weekend away to Belfast was discussed and names and deposits are now being taken.
Guild member Florrie Foley reported on her recent visit to An Grianan and showed the members the beautiful crafts which she had made there. The competition was won by Kitty Foyle, 2nd Helen Kavanagh, 3rd Pat Brophy and the raffle winners were Nuala Costello and Lily Sheeran.
The next guild meeting will take place on Wednesday June 6 at 8pm. Borris in Ossory ICA guild’s weekend away this year will from Sunday July 29 to Wednesday August 1and the venue will be Belfast. Names and deposits of €100 should be given to Lily Sheeran (0505-41308) as soon as possible.
PROGRESSIVE 25 DRIVE
The results of last week’s Progressive 25 Drive in the O’Brien Hall were as follows 1st John and Catherine Dalton, 2nd Jack Mooney and Paddy Sheeran, Johnny Butler and Seamus O’Grady, 10th game Seamus Byrne and Joe Dooley, 15th game Mary Maher and Michael Doyle, 20th game Martin Walsh and Martin Delaney. Raffle winners were Michael Muldowney and Tom Quigley. The Progressive 25 Drive will continue next Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm.
The hall is now officially closed for the summer months and will be open on Thursday and Saturday nights only.
Sympathy is extended to Teresa Kelly, Borris-in-Ossory on the recent death of her cousin, the late Mr Jeremiah (Jerry) O’Carroll, Kilford Arms Hotel, Kilkenny and late of Moyvane Village, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. His death took place at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harolds Cross, Dublin on Thursday May 3. His remains reposed at Lyon’s Funeral Home, Derry Listowel on Saturday evening May 5 until removal to the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane. Following requiem mass on Sunday, burial took place in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane. The late Jerry is deeply regretted by his brothers Brendan, Con and Mike, sister Marietta, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
The late Jerry spent several years in Borris-in-Ossory as manager of the Leix County Hotel and made many friends during his time here. More recently Jerry worked as manager of the Kilford Arms Hotel, Kilkenny where he was held in very high esteem by the proprietors and was treated as one of the family. As testimony of this, Jerry’s remains reposed at their home in Kilkenny before being returned to his native County Kerry for funeral and burial.
SOCIAL IN KILLASMEESTIA
A social will take place in Killasmeestia Community Centre on this Friday night May 18 with music by Liam O’Sullivan. Dancing will be from 9.30pm to 12.30am and supper will be served.
