A HARDY group of amateur Laois cyclists are doing it for a good cause this weekend, May 19 and 20.
The Borris-in-Ossory cycling club are going to cycle some 188km to Roscrea, raising money for the Laois Offaly Spina Bifida Association, and for Pieta House Roscrea.
Organiser Brian Kealy is asking the public to come out in support of the group as they pass through each town, in what is their first such fundraising attempt.
“The group decided to try and raise a few pounds for spina bifida, and for the new Pieta House outreach centre in Roscrea, which has just been bought. It will pay for suicide counsellors for it,” he said.
They had a successful cabaret fundraiser last month which brought in €2,000, and are hoping to raise €6,000 this weekend. The twelve cyclists have sponsorship cards, while bucket collectors will follow the peleton in their white t-shirts through each town.
On Saturday, they will set out from Midland Tyres in Borris-in-Ossory at 10am, passing through Mountrath, Portlaoise, Mountmellick, Tullamore, Clara, Moate and stopping overnight in Athlone.
Sunday will see them continue through Cloghan, Ferbane and Birr, finishing in Roscrea.
“It’s our first go at this, but hopefully it will be an annual event,” says Brian. For more information, contact him on 086 3547516.
