ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
Plans for this year’s parade are progressing well. This year’s theme is Springtime in Mountmellick. The committee are organising a series of events for O’Connell square, details of events will be published next week.
We need as many floats and participants as possible to take part in order to make the parade memorable. Weekly meetings will be held in The Druid at 8pm every Tuesday until St Patrick’s Day. New members always welcome.
The current art exhibition in the gallery features Laois artists, Rebecca Deegan and Donna Kearns. The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. All are welcome. The adult book club meets the first Tuesday of each month. New members welcome. Internet, printing, scanning and photocopying services are available in the library.
The library hopes to start an adult crossword club. If you are interested, please phone 057 8644572 or give your name to a member of staff.
Mountmellick Angling Association is holding its AGM on Tuesday February 19 at 8pm in the Town Hall.
Mountmellick Drama Group will stage Ray Cooney and John Chapman’s hilarious farce ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’ on Thursday February 28 and Friday and Saturday March 1 and 2 at 8pm nightly in the community arts centre. Admission €10 with concessions €5.
This play exposes the intricacies and complications which ensue when different sets of hopeful lovers all converge on the bedroom of the Markham’s supposedly empty flat. The complications and deceptions which follow assure a hectic and hilarious evening.
This year’s drama festival runs from Friday March 8 to Friday March 15 inclusive at
8pm nightly. It will feature groups from around the country competing in the open and confined amateur drama competitions. Full details of all plays next week.

SAVE A LIFE
Sarsfields LFC are running a course on how to use a defibrillator on Wednesday February 27 at 6.30pm at the GAA clubhouse Acragar. A limited number of spaces are available for non-members. Contact Emma McEvoy at 087 9836629.
Coming up to St Patrick’s day Sarsfields LFC will be selling green ribbons for the Carer’s Association. Ribbons are €2 each and your support would be appreciated.
Funds raised in Laois will be used for the Carer’s Association in the county. Why not join in wearing the green and support a good cause
PROPERTY/HOME TAX MEETING
A public meeting will be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday February 26 at 8pm. This is an information and campaign meeting on the implications for homeowners and householders of the property/home tax. Alternatives to this unjust tax on the family home will be discussed. Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley will host the meeting. All are welcome to attend.
GUN CLUB AGM
Mountmellick and District Game Preservation Association and Gun Club AGM will take place in the Owenass Hall on Friday February 22 at 8.30pm. All members are asked to attend. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the club’s affiliation to Laois Regional Game Council.

The ‘First World War – Mountmellick Research Group’ is a local group set up to research and commemorate Mountmellick’s involvement in World War 1. ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next meeting is on Wednesday February 20 at 10.30am in the MDA when the AGM will be held and a new committee elected. We hope that all members will attend this important meeting. Any members who would like to be on the committee should put their names forward for election.
New members are welcome to join the club at any time throughout the year.

aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: dancing with Maureen Culleton from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital 2pm to 4pm.
ST VINCENT’S SUPPORT GROUP
The Relatives and Friends of St Vincent’s Hospital Support Group held a minute’s silence at
their board meeting on Thursday February 7 as a mark respect on the sudden passing of their chairperson Councillor Pat Bowe who worked tirelessly on behalf of the group. Ar bheis Dé go raibh sé.
This year’s pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Wednesday July 17 to Wednesday July 24 at a cost of €770 per person sharing. We will stay at The Solitude Hotel. The spiritual leaders will be Fr Mícheál Murphy PP and Fr Pat Hennessy PP. Contact Eleanor at 087 7670915.
Juvenile hurling training takes place each Monday evening in the sports complex at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30pm for u8 and 7.30pm to 8.30pm for u10 and u12. U8 football training takes place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.
GAA DINNER DANCE

COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE
The centre are delighted to announce their new website w at www.mountmellickartscentre.ie. They have also opened a Facebook page called Mountmellick Arts Centre. They have an event’s questionnaire in a number of locations in the town and all who complete the questionnaire will be entered in a free draw for 2 season tickets to the drama festival. Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.

LATE EVELYN DILLON
There was much regret at the death of Evelyn Dillon (nee Murphy) of Emmet Street on Thursday February 7 at St Vincent’s Hospital Mountmellick. A kindly person and a good neighbour and friend, Evelyn will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Remains reposed at Moloney’s Funeral Home until removal on Saturday to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery.
The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Evelyn’s family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.

Mountmellick Scout Group held their investiture on Thursday February 7 and welcomed 38 new members; 13 Beavers, 14 Cubs and 11 scouts along with 5 new leaders took the promise to be true to the scout law. All groups meet on Thursday nights, Beavers in the Methodist hall, Cubs in the Owenass hall and Scouts in the YM hall. See page 16.
