Comhrá Gaeilge is a competition during the Fleadh for un 9,11,13,15, and 18s. It is a conversation in Irish and can be most useful as a preparation over the years for the oral exam in the Junior/Leaving Certs. We encourage the children to take part The Laois Fleadh will take place in Stradbally on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd June. Entry to the competition is €2 per competitor. The Laois Special Olympics team brought more honours to their clubs recently at the Regional Leinster Final in The Equitation and Trial Ride event. Abbeyleix Acorns were successful in the following Conor MacGearailt won a gold medal for Trail Ride and Equitation, Anne Foley won bronze medal for Equitation and Gold for Trail Ride. Alan O’Hanlon gold for Equitation 4th for Trail Ride. Eimear Furlong gold for Equitation 4th for the Trail Ride. Joe Kerr silver for Equitation, Silver for the Trail Ride. Elizabeth Oxley bronze for Equitation 4th for Trail Ride. Laois warriors club members brought further honour to their clubs with Noel O’Brien getting a Bronze medal for Equitation 7 a bronze Medal for Trail Ride. Mary-Clare Shaughnessy won a silver medal For Equitation and was placed 5th place for the Trail Ride. The athletes acknowledge the tremendous support they received from all the helpers from Laois Riding for the Disabled, Abbeyleix Acorns and Shirley Mac Dermott who helped make the games such a success.
Defibrillator certified training IHS/HSE will be available free of charge to the community on Friday May 3 in Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. This is a great opportunity for sporting and recreational clubs or individuals to avail of CPR training. Tidy Towns /AGM
Abbeyleix Tidy Towns AGM will take place on Wednesday May 1, Venue Heritage House. The hardworking committee have brought much success to the town. To progress further we need much more support from the community. Abbeyleix were finalists in The National Green Awards in “the Green Community Category held in Dublin on April 18. Cloughjordan an Eco village were the winners. We would welcome any new ideas on how we can improve our town. A fundraising sale in aid of Laois Sports Inclusion Disability Programme will take place in Moynan’s Shop Abeyleix on Thursday May 2 and Friday May 3 from 10am-5pm. The organisers have been overwhelmed with the generous donations to date. There will be electrical items, tableware, baked goods, jewellery, great raffle prizes and lots more. A selection of goods are on display in Moynans windows. Please support this very worthy cause.

Following the success of Abbeyleix at the LivCom awards in Abu Dabi we have been asked by Port Fairy (Winners 2012) to help them celebrate a community event on Friday May 25.
