Borris In Ossory



The annual Social Services Church gate collection will be taken up at all churches in the parish on Saturday and Sunday July 13 and 14. Please give generously. Proceeds from the collection goes towards funding some of the work done by the committee, including meals on wheels, laundry, chiropody, outings, parties and hospital visitations.


The Annual Social Services outing will take place on Wednesday July 10 to Castlecomer Discovery Park, the Chocolate Garden and Rathwood Centre, Co Carlow. A full bus will travel and they will return to the Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow for an evening meal.


On Monday June 24 the Gardening Group had a most enjoyable visit to Dunmore Country school in Durrow with Tanguy . This month’s meeting will be on Thursday July 11 at 8pm in St Canices Hall. This is the place to find out what to do with the glut of vegetables at this time of year, so see you there.


All those travelling on the Borris in Ossory ICA trip to Wales are reminded that the coach will be in the Hotel Carpark, Borris in Ossory at 5am on Sunday morning July 14. Passengers are also advised to bring passports or driving licence in case identification is required.


The last meeting of Borris in Ossory ICA Guild took place in St Canice’s Hall on Wednesday July 3, presided over by Helen Kavanagh. The six members of the guild who attended Laois Week at An Grianan reported on their very enjoyable week. Seven members attended the recent Federation meeting in Clough and a report was given on same. Arrangements were made for the guild to enter the ICA Competition at the Ossory Show in Rathdowney.

All those travelling on the trip to Wales were reminded to be in the Hotel Carpark, Borris in Ossory at 5am on Sunday morning July 14. Members will undertake a course of chair based exercises with Julie Maguire in September. The guest speaker at the meeting was local resident Jean Michel who spoke to the members about disruptions to the environment and destruction of the universe by man, which affects all living things and causes changes to our weather patterns. The competition for the nicest small arrangement of flowers was won by Lily Sheeran, 2nd Pat Brophy, 3rd Kitty Foyle and the raffle winners were Noreen Whelan, Margaret Jestin and Margaret Scott. Members will take a break for the summer and the next meeting will take place on Wednesday September 4 at 8pm. The competition on the night will be the best pot of blackcurrant jam.


The Cemetery Mass in Skeirke Cemetery will be held on this Thursday July 11 at 7.30pm.

The annual litter inter-community litter challenge is now in full swing. The weekly sweep – up will take place on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. The committee would appreciate if all residents made an effort during the next few weeks to keep their areas neat and tidy.

The Ossory Agricultural Show will take place on Sunday July 28 at the Showgrounds, Coolfin Cross, Mountrath Road, Rathdowney. There will be classes in cattle, sheep, horses, poultry, eggs, jam, home baking, arts, crafts,, vegetables, produce, flowers and photography, and also junior classes.
