Men’s Shed – Interested?

Local interest in a community led initiative, called “Men’s Shed”, is currently being explored. Sheds are voluntary clubs where men get together socially and usually engage in a variety of DIY projects. The motto is: “Men don’t talk face to face - they talk shoulder to shoulder.”

The group operates in a co-operative way, is self-governing and in most cases self-sustainable. We would like to know if the need for such an initiative exists within the broader community and would like to broaden the concept to include women.

Any person –man or woman, retired or between jobs – who would be interested to share their skills or learn new skills, or just want to know more about the project, please contact Mick Tynan (087 2489975) or Chris Uys (083 1106210).

LOCAL HERO

Commandant Colin Lawlor, Clonking Abbeyleix was the recipient of a “Seiko Just in Time Award “ at the Irish Water Safety National Awards ceremony at Dublin City Hall last November last. Colin carried out a daring and successful rescue on the river Nore in Kilkenny in. August 2011.

Just prior to this daring rescue the Irish soldier had completed a Water Safety course with Laois Water Safety at Portlaoise and attributes his successful rescue to methods learned there.
