Late ELIZABETH DELANEY
Condolences to the family of the late Elizabeth (Lill) Delaney (née Kirwan) of Shanahoe, Abbeyleix who died on March 29 in the loving care of St Brigid’s Hospital, Shaen. Predeceased by her husband Jack, sons Thomas and John, deeply regretted by her loving sons Micheal, Willie and Tony, daughter Mary, extended family and friends. Reposed at her home. Removal to St Brigid’s Church, Shanahoe followed by burial in St Fintan’s Cemetery, Raheen. Donations if desired to St Brigid’s Hospital, Shaen.
April meeting and AGM was held on Tuesday April 1. Pat o Halloran President presided. Meeting opened with prayer and My Land. Votes of sympathy were passed with Yvonne Porter and the Clooney family on their recent bereavements. Alice Reilly sec, read minutes of last year’s AGM. Catherine Smith, treasurer, gave financial report. National ICA AGM will be held at the Mullengar Park Hotel on May 24. Federation meeting is in Mountmellick on April 23. Members will attend. Alice Reilly sec gave report on past years which was a fruitful and fulfilled one of the highlights of the year was the launch of the centenary book on November 6. Next came the craft display in Abbeyleix library followed by the centenary dinner dance in the golf club on February 28, all of which were a great success and enjoyed by all. Noreen Byrne, information officer presided over the election of officers 2014. President Pat o Halloran, Vice Pres Mary Hearns, Secretary Alice Reilly, Treasurer Catherine Smith, PRO Helen Ryan. Winner of novice cup Alice Reilly. Competition 1 Alice Reilly, 2 Violet Rathwell. Raffle 1 Alice Reilly and 2 Brenda Dunican. Meeting came to end with supper served by Helen Ryan. Next meeting May 6 at 8pm.
Fine Gael Abbeyleix Branch recently ran a very successful and well attended fundraising cabaret in The Manor Hotel Abbeyleix.Music was supplied by Abbeyfolk.Mr Charles Flanagan T.D was in attendance along with Mr Charles Mcdonald (former T.D)councillors John Bonham and James Daly. Mr Flanagan officially endorsed Mr Jim Ring as Fine Gael Candidate for the upcoming Council Elections. He wished him well in his campaign and urged the party to get behind their local candidate and ensure he is elected. A great nights entertainment with refreshments was had and everyone was in agreement it would become an annual event.
LATE EILEEN CLOONEY
Eileen Clooney nee Dunne Clonad) who was predeceased by her husband Jimmy, passed away after a short illness on March 21 at her home. She was surrounded by her loving family, Catherine Lynch, Kells,, Bernadette O Connor, The Heath, Anne Clooney, Boley, Geraldine Joyce, Kildangan, William Clooney, New Jersey, USA, Patricia Poe, Virginia, USA, Fintan Clooney, Boley, Rosemary Power, Waterford, Gemma Delaney, Monasterevin and John Clooney, Portlaoise. Her remains reposed in the Chaple of Rest in Portlaoise and was removed to St. Brigids Church, Shanahoe for requiem mass celebrated by Fr Jimmy Kelly. Fr Kelly paid tribute to the wonderful person, always giving, not only to her own family but to her many friends and neighbours. The turn out at her funeral expressed the huge loss everyone was feeling. The beautiful music and songs were sung by Margaret and Kim Bergin, and Damien Bowe, who made it very special. Eileen was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery where the congregation joined together in a loving and moving rendition of “A Mother’s love is a blessing”. Eileen was known far and near, her friends tell of it being a privilege to have known her as a wonderful wife and mother and a generous and faithful friend, and the great memories of her good humour, and wit will live on.
She will be sadly missed by her loving family, her sisters Nora Dunne, Gertie Quirke, and brothers Mickey, Leo, and Christy Dunne, extended family, sons and daughters in law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and many friends. May she rest in peace.
ICA Choir will visit Abbeyleix Hospital on May 13 at 1 30pm and St Vincents Hospital Mountmellick on May 14.

The Aware Support Group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and other mood related conditions meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in St Peter and Pauls Parish Centre, Portlaoise. Between April 2 and 25 Caroline Conway will exhibit in the library art gallery. Also between April 4 and 22 Orla McDonagh and Heywood Students will exhibit in the gallery also. From April 29 - May 30 Spink Ceolamhtas will hold an exhibition of photos, trophys etc as part of their hosting the Laois Fleadh Cheoil. Juvenile Chess Club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. CoderDojo classes for children will start next Thusday 5.30-6.30pm, it is booked out at present. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds. The next class will take place on Saturday April 12 at 11am. Booking is essential for each class. Ring the library at 057-8730020. Our Knitting Club takes place each Wednesday, 10.30 and 12.30pm. Next meeting of our Adult Book Club will be on Thursday April 20 at 6pm. The Book is the Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini. Leaving Cert German Grinds cancelled due to lack of interest. On May 22 we celebrate the Bealtaine Festival in the Library with a show entitled ‘The Good Old Days’. The show includes Victorian Ballads, Comedy Sketches, Curiosities. “All are Welcome to a night of unparalleled entertainment with a fully costumed show of songs and comedy from the golden era of Victorian Music Hall. With our very special guests visiting from the last century, join us Down at the old Bull and Bush. Costume not essential, but prize given for best hat/accessory in the audience.
Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC are beginning their series of fun run/walks. The first one, a 5k, takes place in Ballyroan on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30pm and will take place every 2nd Wed following in Ballinakill, Cullohill, Abbeyleix and the final one a 10k in Ballyroan on Wednesday June 4.
