An ecumenical remembrance service takes place on June 29 in Abbeyleix at 2pm in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church to remember all those who have died in farm accidents. Tea and refreshments afterwards in a local hotel with a number of keynote speakers. The event is being organised by Brian and Norma Rohan and is a 32 county event. Golf Club

The Abbeyleix Golf Club takes place from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 20. Special juvenile competition on Monday, July 21. Celebrate 40 years.

Abbeyleix Library

In June Abbeyleix FEC skills group will exhibit a selection of art, woodwork and upholstery. Joseph O’Faoláin will also exhibit in the library in June. Juvenile chess club meets every Saturday morning at 10am. CoderDojo classes are postponed for the summer and will resume in October. Eadrom Art class for 6 to 12 year olds. The next class will take place in June and details will be posted here later. Booking is essential for each class. Ring the library at 057-8730020. Our knitting club has been postponed until the end of summer when the club recommences we will announce it here. Next meeting of our adult book club will be on Thursday June 19 at 6pm. The book is The God of Small People by Arundhati Roy. In late June our annual summer reading challenge for children of primary school age will commence.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL

The St Vincent de Paul are opening a shop on Main Street, Abbeyleix in June. We are accepting donations of clothing, footwear, homewares, books and toys in the shop from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday. These items will then be sold in the store, any profits raised in the shop will be spent on the society’s activities assisting individuals and families in the local community.

Walking festival

Killamuck Bog Abbeyleix. This Failte ireland approved loop features old bog tracks and peaceful wooded lanes. Meet at the Manor Hotel in Abbeyleix on July 14 at 7.30pm. This walk takes two hours and is 10km.

Late Helen Mills

Condolences to the family of the late Helen Mills (née Holohan) of the Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix who died on June 13. Deeply regretted by her loving husband Paddy, son Patrick, daughters Helen and Mary, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at Portlaoise hospital. Removal to The Church Of The Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix for requiem mass. Interment afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery. Donations, if desired, to Brain Injury Ireland.

ICA

Next meeting is July 1 at 8pm. A seat to celebrate 100 years of the ICA will be unveiled shortly.
