Harvest moon dance

Harvest Moon Dance in aid of Knock National School Renovation for Education Fund takes place on Saturday, August 16 in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. Launch of the Threshing Day on Sunday September 14 at the launch. Music by Crystal Swing. Bring your dancing shoes and help us to build our new school in knock.

Abbeyleix Garden Fete takes place on Monday, August 4.

Bees & Butterflies

The Abbeyleix Bog Project are organizing a workshop on Bumble bees and butterflies by the Biodiversity Data Centre on Wednesday, August 13 at 10am, at Heritage House Abbeyleix and Abbeyleix Bog. All are welcome and the event is free, contact emma.g.seale@gmail.com to book, please bring suitable outdoor clothing, footwear and your lunch.

Exhibition

Seoda - Treasure of the Wetlands - photographic exhibition by Tina Claffey observations of the flora and fauna of midland bogs, including Abbeyleix Bog. Open on August 23 & 26-30 at Abbeyleix Library. Admission is free.

Bog plan

Abbeyleix Bog Project has commissioned a CMP for the local amenity and the draft plan can now be seen in the Abbeyleix Library as well as the Abbeyleix Heritage House. Comments are welcomed and details on how to do that are available at both venues. The CMP was made possible by a grant received from the Heritage Council. Enquiries to info@abbeyleixbog.ie

ST VINCENT DE PAUL

The St Vincent de Paul are opening a shop on Main Street, Abbeyleix. We are accepting donations of clothing, footwear, homewares, books and toys in the shop from 10am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday. These items will then be sold in the store, any profits raised in the shop will be spent on the society’s activities assisting individuals and families in the local community.

Ballinakill poool

Grand opening of the heated outdoor pool in Ballinakill on Sunday, July 6 at with a family fun day which starts at 1pm All welcome.

Late Helen Cahill

Sympathy is offered to the family of Helen Cahill, Tullore, Ballyroan. Helen passed away peacefully at the Beacon Hospital, Dublin after a short illness. She was a fantastic set dancer and her love of dancing was known to many. She was a great supporter of the social dancing in the golf club where she spent many a Thursday night teaching everyone a few steps. They truly will miss her.Thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.

De Vesci Gardens

De Vesci gardens will once again open their gates for the public enjoyment. Taking place on Sunday August 10 from 2pm - 5pm in aid of Abbeyleix and Portlaoise Lions club, the day will include side attractions as well as walks around the beautiful gardens. Admission is €5 per adult and kids free so come along and bring a friend.

SOCIAL DANCING

Takes place every Thursday night in the Golf Club, Abbeyleix from 9.30 - 12.30pm. proceeds in aid of Lions club funds. With performers such as Pat Daly, Pat Costello, Unity and Laurence Campion, a great nights entertainment is guaranteed. This Thursday, July 31 Pat Daly will be appearing so come along.

Late Buddy Gordon

Condolences to the family of the late Buddy Gordon (née Holohan) of Thornberry, Abbeyleix. Deeply regretted by her loving husband George, sons Kevin and Darren, daughters Elizabeth and Gillian, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her residence. Removal to the Church Of The Most Rosary Abbeyleix for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery.

Laois Architecture

Portlaoise Library will again host a series lectures on the historical architecture of Laois. www.laoislibraries.ie
