The 12th Gordon Bennett Irish Classic Car Run will zoom through the roads of Laois over the June Bank Holiday Weekend, 30th May to 2nd June 2014.
The Gordon Bennett run will cater for all classic and vintage cars registered prior to 1983. This event commenced in 2003 to commemorate 100 years of a very important race that took place on the island of Ireland in 1903.
In 1903 it was sponsored by the wealthy American magnate by the name of James Gordon Bennett. Twelve drivers from four countries, England, France, Germany and America participated in the race through the counties of Laois, Kildare and Carlow. Only five of the twelve cars entered completed the course at an average speed of 47mph.
Highlights this year include a civic reception at County Hall for the launch of this event at 7:30pm. On May 31, and June 1 and 2, cars will assemble at The Heath each morning before a leisurely tour each through the three counties.
The event will also tie in with the Rose of Tralee regional final in Portlaoise on Saturday. After a drive through the scenic areas of the Slieve Bloom mountains, a farewell BBQ will be held in The Heath on the final night, to conclude the weekend’s motoring activities.
