SENIOR CITIZENS

The annual Senior Citizens Party, organized by Borris in Ossory Social Services, took place in the PE Hall, St Joseph’s Convent School on Sunday February 23. Special guests at the party were Rev Fr Jackie Robinson PP, Archdeacon John and Irene Murray, Dr Seamus and Noreen Fitzgerald, Mary Delaney from the HSE, Portlaoise, also Sr Frances and residents from Cuan Bhride, Rathdowney and Peadar Cleary and residents from Erkina House, Rathdowney. Catering was by Sheelagh Maher and her staff from Rosemount Catering and the musical entertainment was supplied by Martin Delaney. Social Services Chairperson Marian Carey paid tribute to the caterers, to Martin, to all the entertainers and to all the Social Services committee members who worked hard to make the day so successful.

ASH WEDNESDAY

Wednesday next is Ash Wednesday March 5, the beginning of Lent. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at 7.30pm Mass in Borris-in-Ossory. There will be no morning Mass in Borris-in-Ossory.

Distribution of Ashes in Knockaroo will be at 10am and distribution of Ashes in Killasmeestia will be at 10am.

MASS FOR LENT

There will be Mass at 7.30pm in St Canice’s Church every evening during Lent. This is to facilitate parishioners who would like to attend Mass every day during Lent. There will be no morning Mass except on Saturday mornings at the usual time of 10am.

FAREWELL

Good wishes are extended to Dean Séamus McEvoy who has been appointed to Seir Kieran Parish, Clareen, Co Offaly. A presentation was made to Dean McEvoy by Fr Jackie Robinson PP on Thursday February 20 in Killasmeestia Community Centre. He thanked Fr McEvoy for all his good work in the Parish and wished him well.

FIRST CONFESSIONS

First Confessions will take place on Wednesday March 12 in St Canice’s Church at 8pm for Borris-in-Ossory School and in Knockaroo Church on Thursday March 13 at 7.30pm for Killadooley School.

ICA

The next meeting of Borris in Ossory ICA Guild will take place in St Canice’s Hall on Wednesday March 5 at 8pm. All new members welcome.

We ran a six week course of armchair Pilates in St Canice’s Hall before Christmas with Julie Maguire, which proved to be very successful. We hope to start a further six week course on March 12. These exercises are not too intensive or not too strenuous. Non members welcome. If you are interested please contact Helen 087 9285048 or Noreen 086 2367511.

TIDY TOWNS

The Annual General Meeting of Killasmeestia Tidy Towns will take place on Thursday March 6 in the Community Centre at 8pm. Committee very proud of all its achievements, and also the fact that they are cup holders of the Laois Tidy Towns competition. New members welcome.

DAFFODIL DAY

Daffodil Day this year takes place on Friday March 28 and organisers in the Borris in Ossory area would welcome more volunteers to help sell the daffodils. If anyone has an hour to spare on Daffodil Day or any day that week, please contact Lily Sheeran 0505 41308 or Stella Kealy 0505 41391.

DERRINSALLAGH

A meeting about Derrinsallagh Cemetry will be held on Tuesday March 11 at 8.30pm in the FAS Office (Church Carpark). Items to be discussed will include the installation of a new alter and the removal of trees around the cemetery. Everyone welcome to attend. The mowing rota will also be discussed. Anyone wishing to be added to the list is most welcome.

WOMENS WALKING

On Sunday March 16 Borris in Ossory women’s walking group are holding a “Ladette” football match in St Josephs National school field at 2.30pm as part of their mini marathon fundraising for 2014 in aid of Helping Alopecia Trust. The Ladette football game will feature many local men dressing up as women and competing against each other. Sponsorship cards will be circling the area so keep an eye out for your favourite Ladette. A VIP will also make an appearance to award the winning team with their medals. Refreshments served on the day. Your support is appreciated, so come along for an enjoyable day assured for young and old.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

The annual 25 card game in aid of Multiple Sclerosis will take place this Thursday March 6 in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm. This worthy cause can be supported by coming along on the night, buying a ticket, giving a donation or sponsoring a raffle prize. Tickets €10.

PROGRESSIVE 25 DRIVE

The Progressive 25 Drive continues every Thursday night in the O’Brien Hall at 9pm. All welcome.

BILLIARDS

The Joseph Thompson Memorial Billiards Tournament will be starting soon. This annual tournament commemorates the late Joseph Thompson, Borris in Ossory, who was a well-known billiard player. Each year it attracts top class competitors from all over Ireland. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Joe 086 8421598.

The Cavanagh Cup Perpetual Billiards Tournament will also start in the O’Brien Hall soon. This competition is confined to paid up members of the club. Anyone interested should put their name on the sheet in the hall.
