Kyle 6K Road Race

Our annual 6k road race took place on Sunday May 18 at 12pm sharp. There was a good turnout for the day despite the terrible weather. Photos of all runners can be found on our face book page and we would like to thank everyone for all their support. Go raibh mile maith agaibh.

ALBERT GARRETT RIP

The death took place on Saturday May 24 at the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise of Albert George Garrett, Springhill, Borris in Ossory, Co. Laois. His remains reposed at Guilfoyle’s Funeral Home Castletown, Mountrath until removal on Monday May 26 to St Mark’s Church Borris in Ossory for funeral service followed by burial immediately afterwards in Kyle Cemetery. The late Albert is deeply regretted by his loving wife Bella and family Lorna, Cecil and Peter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren Tara and Finn, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

OUTING

Borris-in-Ossory Social Services annual outing will take place on Tuesday July 1. The venue this year is Dublin Zoo, with a stop for morning tea/coffee en route and returning to the Gandon Inn for evening meal. Names should be given as soon as possible as there are only a limited number of places on the bus. Anyone wishing to travel should contact Sr Regina at 086-3615701.

OPEN DAY

An open day will take place at Clonohill Gardens, Coolrain on Sunday June 8 in aid of Laois Hospice and the new Solas Bhride Centre. The gardens will be open from 1pm - 7pm. Owner Enda Thompson Phelan will be on hand to guide visitors around the 1.5 acre gardens. Visitors can purchase plants on the day and gardening and cookery books will also be on sale, all in aid of charity.

Afternoon tea will be served. Clonohill House and Gardens are adjacent to Laois Angling Centre, Coolrain. The gardens will be signposted on the day or follow signs to Laois Angling Centre.

CEMETERY MASSES

The dates for this year’s Cemetery masses in the parish are as follows: Wednesday June 4 - New Cemetery, Borris-in-Ossory at 7.30pm, Wednesday June 11 - Knockaroo Cemetery at 7.30pm, Wednesday June 18 - Killasmeestia Cemetery at 7.30pm and Wednesday June 25 - Skeirke Cemetery at 7.30pm.

ICA

Borris-in-Ossory ICA meeting will take place on this Wednesday June 4. Will all members please note that the meeting will start at the later time of 8.30pm due to the cemetery mass in the new cemetery.

GARDENING

The next meeting of the Gardening Group will be on Thursday June 12 in St Canices Hall at 8pm. Everyone is more than welcome to attend to get loads of tips to improve the garden.

ELECTIONS

Voting in the European and Local Elections on Friday May 23 was very brisk all day in the Borris in Ossory area. Total poll recorded in Borris in Ossory Polling Station was 68% and in Killasmeestia Polling Station it was 73%.

GAA CLUB

Lotto draw Results for May 27. The numbers were 6, 16, 19 and 23. The jackpot of €3000 was not won.

DEFIBRILLATOR

Borris in Ossory defibrillator group is looking for new people to train to keep this vital service in the area. We would also like existing members to do a refresher course in the coming weeks. Ossory Show

The Ossory Agricultural Show will take place on Sunday July 27 at the Showgrounds, Coolfin Cross, Mountrath Road, Rathdowney. There will be classes in cattle, sheep, horses, poultry, eggs, jam, home baking, arts, crafts, vegetables, produce, flowers and photography, and also junior classes. There will be many attractions on the day including most suitably dressed lady and gentleman, Little Miss Ossory and most suitably dressed boy, dog show, trade stands, music, etc. Show schedule and further details about the show are available from the secretary Catherine Fitzgerald, Conoboro Road, Rathdowney at 087 9975902 or 0505 48939.
