Coderdojo, a coding club in Portlaoise aimed at kids aged 8 and up, will be starting free classes on Wednesday March 5 at Portlaoise Youth Café (above Subway, next door to Portlaoise Credit Union).
The classes for the first six week period are full, however organisers have stated on their Facebook page that there will be more.
“Its our intention with this initial six week run to use this time to enable us to get established and work through any teething problems etc that may arise. We will then be returning in September with a new venue which enable us to take much larger number and because the way CoderDoJo works is on a invitation only basis, we would ask at this time that any parents interested in registering their children please email firstname.lastname@example.org to go onto the waiting list for September”.
In a little over two years since starting in Cork, there are now Coderdojos in more than 40 countries worldwide. Coderdojo is a movement orientated around running free coding clubs and regular coding sessions for young people.
CoderDojo is a fantastic way to introduce young people to the fun of creating computer games, websites and smartphone apps. Coderdojo initiates their journey in the technology world. Other young people in CoderDojos around the world are already starting businesses - design and selling apps, making money! Who knows, the future Google, Facebook or EA Games may have its origins in Laois.
