Community comes together to help re-open local lake

The Durrow Cullahill Anglers are delighted now to have a wonderful local amenity to go coarse fishing, with large numbers of pike, rud, tench, perch and eels living in the newly re-opened Grantstown Lake.

Previously the anglers would travel as far as Ballinalsoe to go fishing, but now with a year permit and day passes available locally, anyone can head along to Grantstown.

A number of local people were instrumental in getting the lake back to its former glory, and spent many years working, not just on cleaning up the lake, but on the large amount of paperwork required.

Michael G Phelan, Pat Dunphy, and Martin Bergin have all been working tirelessly to restore the lake. Speaking to the Leinster Express, Pat said that the area was there for everyone to enjoy.

“This amenity area is for everyone, not just the anglers. It is very good for the local community,” he said.

Michael G agreed with him, stating that the lake had previously been considered one of the best in Europe, with people travelling from a number of different countries to fish there.

“We are now hoping that the council will put signs for the lake on the motorway to advertise the lake. The area had fallen into disrepair but it is now family friendly.”
