At an event to recognise outstanding young leaders in Macra na Feirme, Brid Walsh of Durrow/Abbeyleix Macra was one of three to be awarded a National Leadership Award. See Agri Express.

Lotto

The Parish lotto jackpot is heading for €13,850. On March 03 the jackpot was €13,500 and it was not won, small winners were €30 Mary Bergin, €25 Kathleen Drennan, and €20 o V & B Cooney. Lotto of Monday March 18 in Durrow Inn with a possible jackpot of €13,850. Tickets to be handed in before 9.30pm on the nigh to be included in that jackpot

Senior Citizens

Some 150 guests of Durrow Community Council attended the Annual Senior Citizens party in the Castle Arms Hotel Durrow. A wonderful day was enjoyed by all, lovely food and refreshments, great music and dancing. Mrs. Bolger, Cannonswood and Harold Lawlor, Durrow were the oldest lady and male at the party. Mrs. Bolger was presented with bouquet of flower, kindly donated by Lawlor’s Florists and Harold was presented with a gift to mark the occasion. Many thanks to all who helped make the day so successful.

Whist Drive

The Killermogh Parish held their monthly whist drive in the parochial hall, Durrow on Thursday night. Top score was won by Breda Fitzpatrick. 1st lady Annie Walshe, 2nd lady Nora Carroll, 1st gent Donal Bowe, 2nd gent Desmond Finnamore, Halves, Mick Kelly, Pat Delaney and Damien Carter, Low Score Kitty Butler, Quarters, 1st Catherine Galvin Sean Fitzpatrick, 2nd Billy Carter, Mai Conroy and Bernie Cahill, 3rd Liam McCartney, 4th Joe Cass, Raffle; Joe McCartney, Mary Dohney, Berni Cahill, Dickie Byrne, Sheila Duff, Margaret Slevin, Nora Carroll. Next Whist Drive will be held on Thursday March 27 at 8.30 pm.

Fishing

Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers are holding their first Trout fishing competition on St. Patrick’s Day March 17 for the Michael Walsh Cup. This competition will be held if the weather conditions, water level of the river and the flooding on surrounding lands are of a safe condition not to put any angler in danger. The club will “text” all it members in the days prior to the competition to confirm whether the competition will go ahead or be deferred to a later date. The committee urges all who fish to be extra careful while out fishing as conditions are potentially very dangerous. It is very important not to go fishing alone and to bring a mobile phone with you at all times so as you can let your family know that you are safe. It is imperative that membership is up to date so as to avail of cover by the fishing clubs insurance. Membership for season 2014 is now due and can be got in Lawlor’s Gala, the square, Lawlor’s Flower Shop and Michael Walsh, Club secretary.

Grantstown

Brochures for the Grantstown Wood and Lake Nature Reserve are now available in most local business which incorporates an Angling Centre and Walking Trails. Managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Dept. of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, this woodland nature reserve is 58 hectares in size.
