Flex your festive Christmas muscles

For those who are sick of looking at turkey and telly and want to get out into the fresh air this Christmas, there is a huge variety of events taking place all over the county this festive season.

As well as the established events, many towns and villages are hosting walks, runs and cycles from Christmas day through to New Year’s day.

On Christmas Day Goal Miles take place in Stradbally at 10am and Port at 11am. On St Stephen’s Day, the annual Laois Hunt begins in Abbeyleix from 12pm. In Portlaoise the athletic club will host a charity run with registration in St Fintan’s Field at 10am. Rathdowney GAA are hosting a walk from their club grounds, registration from 10.30am.

Ballyroan are also holding a walk, run and cycle, registration from 10am.

The Clonaslee annual walk will take place on this day as well, with walkers taking the longer route urged to arrive early. Portlaoise GAA are hosting a puc fada with registration from 10am, starting at 11am in Rathleague.

The Durrow Development Forum annual walk, starts at Castle Arms Hotel from 11am, along the Leafy Loop.

The St Abban’s Club Run starts at Behan’s Pub on Turra Triangle. Boys U-14 and Ladies off at 11.30am, Mens race at 11.50am.

The Courtwood GAA Charity Game takes place in Courtwood GAA from 11.30am. The Battle of D’Town charity soccer game between Portlaoise Shamrocks and Towerhill Rovers will be in St Fintan’s Field, kick off at 11am.

The Abbeyleix GAA Social Night takes place in the Manor Hotel, Abbeyleix, in aid of Abbeyleix Juvenile GAA with music by The Valves, starting at 10pm.

There are also a number of events on December 29, including a Knockbeg College Belly Buster 5k starting at 12pm, and a Cullahill Christmas Cracker 5k with registration at 11am. The Park/Ratheniska GAA Christmas Cracker will take place on this day in the Park/Ratheniska GAA Club grounds. For more on this visit www.parkratheniskagaa.com. On New Year’s Day Timahoe host their annual walk which will be attended by Dr Eva Orsmond. The Ballacolla New Year’s Day walk takes place from the village, registration from 1.15pm.
