Cuisle Centre Portlaoise

Cuisle Centre Portlaoise

THERE was a huge attendance at the recent launch of the ‘Friends of Cuisle’ night

PJ O’Gorman, chairman of the Cuisle Centre opened the night and spoke about the day to day running of the centre. The centre costs between €175,000 and €200,000 to run every year with all of the monies been raised by voluntary organisations. He also said that the centre is ten years old this year and each year it is taking in more and more patients.

He stated that the centre was paid for at the time of building by specific fundraising events and therefore all money raised at the movement go into the day to day running of the centre and its facilities.

Peter Naughton, medical director spoke of the medical facilities available in the centre and emphasised that all services are free at the point of delivery to every patient.

Patients from Laois and surrounding counties avail of the services provided in the centre. He outlined in detail the services such as manual lymphatic drainage, therapeutic therapies, holistic massage, reflexology, acupuncture, Reiki, cranial therapy, group relaxation, therapy classes and stress management courses. There are also workshops for children, and there are monthly meetings and information sessions provided as well. He spoke at length about his and the board’s constant persistence with the government and the HSE for funding for the centre.

Antoinette Brennan and Kieran Finane, directors of the centre, are heading up the ‘Friends of Cuisle’. Ms Brennan spoke about the purpose of the event. The main issue is to spearhead fundraising events to ensure the centre functions to the level of excellence patients require, therefore the committee will work with people or organisations who want to do a fundraising event for the Cuisle in relation to organisation and promotion of events. The committee also wish to encourage groups to pick the centre as their preferred charity to donate funds and to promote the purpose of the centre and to highlight its facilities and needs. They will also attend events and collect money raised. The big aim is to get the people of Laois and surrounding areas to be familiar with the work of the centre and the requirements of funds.

After the formal launch, all in attendance enjoyed a cheese and wine reception as well as light refreshments. They were invited to view the building, its beautiful gardens and all the therapy rooms where the staff were on hand to give them an insight into the daily routine of the centre.

At the end of the evening the Lions Club and the Portlaoise Choir gave a very generous donation of €1,913 from a recent evening held in the Heritage Hotel.
