Heritage Week treats at Portlaoise Library

A rich tapestry of cultural events will be unfurled at Portlaoise Library this summer, as part of Heritage Week 2014.

Author Neil Richardson will speak about his book ‘A Coward if I return, A Hero if I fall’, and about researching relatives who may have fought in World War I, on Wednesday, August 20, at 6.30pm. There will be a drawing workshop for children on flora and fauna, led by local artist Conor Brennan on Saturday August 23.

Author Colin Murphy visits Portlaoise Library to discuss his book ‘Boycott’ and the phenomenon it describes, on Tuesday, August 26, at 7pm.

Irish History Live will present an interactive history show for children on World War I, at 12pm on August 26, will at 2pm is an introduction to genealogy online.

On Wednesday, August 27, Shay Cullen talks about the Barn Owl and other birds and then allows people to meet them in person.

Also on August 27, as part of the lecture series, at 7pm the overseeing architect Richard McLoughlin will present the history behind Stradbally Market House and will discuss the particular challenges involved in its conservation.

A geology for kids workshop will take place at 11am on Thursday, August 28.

An introduction to the wild animals and wild places of Laois will be given by zoologist Ricky Whelan, chairman of the Irish Wildlife Trust Laois/Offaly Branch, at 7pm on August 28.

And finally there will be a workshop on the local white on white embroidery known as Mountmellick work, on Friday, August 29.
