Fatima pilgrimage

Pilgrimage to Fatima, bus will collect passengers from Portlaoise, Mountmellick, Ballybrittas and Monasterevin. Staying 7 nights in the Hotel Avenida, from June 6 to 13. Carers Association

LOURDES

This year’s pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Wednesday July 17 to Wednesday July 24 at a cost of €770 per person sharing. We will stay at The Solitude Hotel. The spiritual leaders will be Fr Mícheál Murphy PP and Fr Pat Hennessy PP.

ST PAUL’S ENROLMENT

St Paul’s National School Irishtown, welcomes any enquiries about school places for September next or the following years. An open day is being held on Wednesday February 13 from noon to 1.30pm or contact the principal on 057 862 4781. St Paul’s is a small, co-educational primary school under Church of Ireland patronage.

ENROLMENTS

Enrolment for St Joseph’s GNS and Scoil Phadraig Naofa takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday January 29, 30 and 31 from 1pm to 3pm in the schools.

SAFE TALK

An evening about suicide awareness is being held in the Old School, Pearse Street onWednesday January 30 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Everyone is welcome but places are limited, so please contact 057 8624143 to book your place. This is being delivered by Josephine Rigney (HSE).

JUVENILE GAA

Under 8 football training will take place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.

TEENAGE DISCO

Mountmellick Soccer Club is holding a teenage disco in the back lounge of The Mellick on Friday February 8 from 8.30pm to 11pm. Admission is €6. This will be fully supervised with strictly a mineral bar only.

BLOOD DONOR AWARDS

A total of 138 people attended at the recent mobile blood clinic. Awards were given as follows. ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION

The next meeting will be in MDA at 10.30am on Wednesday February 6 when a citizens information officer will explain all the details of last December’s budget and answer your questions. Following this, the AGM will be held on Wednesday February 20 at 10.30am in MDA when a new committee will be elected. Any members who would like to put their names forward are invited to do so. There will be a tea dance in the Bridge House Hotel on Sunday February 10 from 2pm to 5pm. This is being held by the midland regional committee of Active Retirement Ireland. Admission is €10 which includes tea and scones.

Please note that new members are always welcome throughout the year.

At the moment the weekly activities for members are as follows. Mondays: Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: dancing with Maureen Culleton starts again on January 23 from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital 2pm to 4pm.

COMMUNITY GAMES

In the next few weeks the committee will run the art, drama, quiz and talent area finals, details later. For clubs wishing to get involved in the Gaelic football, hurling or camogie events please contact 085 7138940.

COMHALTAS

Classes are back at their usual times. For those attending cupla focal remember to bring your sentence sheets as we continue to build vocabulary. The first session of 2013 will be held on Sunday February 3 in the ICA Hall from 4.30pm for youngest players and from 5pm for more advanced players. All our members and those who like listening to traditional music welcome. The annual concert will be held on Friday March 22 in the Arts Centre. This year Mountmellick Comhaltas marks 25 years of holding classes and 21 years affiliated to Comhaltas so it is hoped to mark these momentous achievements.

Comhaltas hopes to run an event for the year of the Gathering so if any member has any suggestions please let the committee know.

PTAA

The PTAA will be taking applications in the convent extension on Sunday, February 1. Temperance Sunday falls on February 10. The AGM will take place on Monday February 11 in the ICA hall at 8pm. Votes of sympathy were passed with the families of Mrs Peig Forristal, Mrs O’Mara, Mr Rochford, Martin Dunne and Mrs Quinn.

COMPUTER COURSES

LIBRARY

Laois artists Rebecca Deegan and Donna Kearns will launch their art exhibition on Tuesday February 5 from 5.30pm to 7pm in the library gallery. All are welcome.

‘Book Buddies’ junior book club (7 to 9 age group) will meet on Tuesday February 5 from 4pm to 4.30pm. They will discuss a selection of books by author Michael Morpurgo. ‘Rapid Readers’ (10 to 12 age group) will meet Wednesday February 6 from 4pm to 4.30pm. The book for discussion is ‘Colm and the Lazarus Key’ by Kieran Mark Crowley.

The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. All are welcome.

The library hopes to start an adult crossword club shortly. If you are interested, please phone 057 8644572 or give your name to a member of staff.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.

DRAMA

Mountmellick Drama Group will stage Ray Cooney and John Chapman’s hilarious farce ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’ on Thursday February 28 and Friday and Saturday March 1 and 2 at 8pm nightly in the community arts centre. Admission €10 with concessions €5.

This play exposes the intricacies and complications which ensue when different sets of hopeful lovers all converge on the bedroom of the Markham’s supposedly empty flat. The complications and deceptions which follow assure a hectic and hilarious evening.

LATE PATRICK BOWE

There was widespread shock at the unexpected death of Pat Bowe CC, TC of College Avenue on Saturday January 19. Pat was held in good esteem in the community and was well known through his work as Mountmellick Town Councillor and Laois County Councillor.

Removal from Moloney’s Funeral Home to St Joseph’s Church took place on Wednesday morning January 23. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon with burial

afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Pat’s family, relatives, friends and fellow councillors on their bereavement.
