COMMUNITY GAMES

For all competitors who are in the chess and swimming county finals those competitions will be coming up soon so watch out for further details. As soon as MCG has the information we will pass it on. We will hope to run at area finals for the Track and Field in the coming weeks. 

COMHALTAS

Well done to the musicians who played for the Bealtaine tree planting at Kinnitty Castle. This was recorded by the new Irish based tv station, to be shown on the launch night later this month. There was a good response from members for entry to the Laois Fleadh on the June bank holiday weekend. Extra group and ceilí band practices will be organised so please attend. Best of luck to all taking part in the Fleadh.  There is a traditional Irish music concert as a fundraiser for the Fleadh on May 10 in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel. Tickets are €10 or €25 for a family up to 2 adults and 3 children u15. Earlier in the day there is a workshop for intermediate/advanced musicians in a variety of instruments. The cost is €10 and includes entry to the concert. Participants at the workshop are invited to perform at the concert. Tickets at the class or 085 713 8940. A note will be sent out from class regarding the branch instrument bank. Please respond as we need to document our instruments.

KNOCK

The parish joins with the Kildare & Leighlin pilgrimage to Knock in on Sunday June 1 with bus leaving St Joseph’s Church at 8.15am. Cost €10 per seat. Book in parish office.

CASTLEBRACK ROSARY

Rosary will be recited in Castlebrack cemetery each Sunday evening at 7pm. The cemetery mass will be celebrated at 7pm on Sunday May 25. All welcome.

EXHIBITION

Mountmellick Camera Club launch their exhibition in the library on Tuesday May 6 at 6.30pm, all welcome along. Celebrating their 25th year, members invite all to view their work and look forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new ones. The exhibition continues for the month of May.

BEALTAINE AT LIBRARY

Wednesday May 7 at 2.30pm: Delia Murphy Show. Delia’s niece, Carmen Cullen will sing some of Delia’s favourites accompanied by musician Gerry Anderson. Carmen will give a dramatised reading from her novel ‘Two Sisters Singing’ based loosely on Delia’s life. Light refreshments will be served.

Wednesday May 14 at 11am. ‘Musical Sensations’ by the Butterfly Theatre Group.  A music and drama performance for Mountmellick Active Retirement. Magical backdrops, professional artists and many dazzling costumes.

BEALTAINE AT HOSPITAL

On Tuesday May 14 the residents and day care attendees at St Vincent’s Hospital will be treated to a concert of musical memories by Laois ICA Choir. This is invitation only.

BEALTAINE AT BALCONY CINEMA

Wednesday evenings at 8pm during May films aimed at an older audience will be shown. The cinema has free parking and a lift, making it wheelchair accessible. Admission €5. May 7: Shirley Valentine. May 14: The Music Man. May 21: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. May 28: The Searchers.

CIORCAL COMHRÁ

Ciorcal comhrá (Irish conversation group)  meets in the library on Thursday mornings from 10am to 1am. All ages and levels welcome for a friendly chat ‘as Gaeilge’ in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Aware Support Group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and other mood related conditions meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in St Peter and Paul’s Parish Centre Portlaoise. Free service, no referral and no booking required. Wednesday: training for executive members MDA 10am to 1pm. Walking group meet at MDA 10.30am and a special invitation to Delia Murphy Show in the Library 2.30pm. Thursdays: Healthy heart course 2/3 in Wolfe Tone Court 10.30am to 12.30pm. Music & song in St Vincent’s Hospital 2pm to 4pm. Friday: ‘Go for Life Games Blitz’ in Macra Hall 7.30pm.

Congratulations to our team who qualified for the Laois all Ireland ‘Go for Life’ in Dublin in June. Last Wednesday the ARA group met to plan a Campaign of Action for elections issues. Those raised were of great significance to older citizens who take their civic duty of voting seriously. We hope to raise the profile of older people in the community with candidates. Last week the group joined the Portlaoise ARA for their celebration of 10 years, and congratulate them for their fine performance of acting, song and dance to the Country and Western Show, and the delicious food afterwards. They thoroughly enjoyed every minute and thank them for their invitation.
