Summerfest starts this Thursday evening with a visit by the Roses to a ‘Beat on the Street’ in the MDA, followed by a farmers market on Friday and lots of fun races, music and entertainment over the weekend. Come along and enjoy.
The Colette Dowling Memorial Walk For Cancer Research takes place next Sunday June 1 at 11am. The 5k walk goes from The Rock Gaa Club, around Mountmellick and back.

Tricia Kelley, Doris Flannery and Nina Horan thank all who supported their recent Tea Day in aid of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. Almost 100 people attended at Old Bank House where they generously donated a final total of €2,000. Thanks to all who sponsored prizes, baked cakes & goodies & helped out in any way.
Lynda Kiernan who held a Tea Day in her home in Brock View also wishes to thank everyone who kindly supported it, raising another €578 for Laois Alzheimer’s services.
Cubs participated in the county camp in Srahan with 10 groups from around the Slieve Bloom county. Though a wet weekend it didn’t dampen the spirits and they enjoyed backwoods cooking, pioneering, orienteering and field games. On Saturday evening the cubs were split up with cubs from each group to prepare and serve a shared meal with Leaders’ supervision. They then attended an intercultural trade fair event where each group was allocated a country. Mountmellick represented Japan and attended in the costume of the country, performed a game and supplied items to trade at their stall of the country. All had a great week-end.
Mountmellick Angling Club permits and membership cards are available from Victor Cox’s Shop, O’Connell Square and water keepers Tommy Quigley and Paul Lalor. You must hold a current permit to fish club waters. The club are holding a collection on Saturday May 31 at Supervalu to raise funds for river bank maintenance work. This work will help us to maintain the fishery and make it a safe environment for all members, all support greatly appreciated.
Well done to all who took part in the area track and field finals on Monday. Best of luck in St Abban’s on Sunday June 15 in the county finals to all those going forward. Comhaltas is organising a trip to Brú Ború in Cashel on July 1 departing Mountmellick at 6.30pm. Show starts at 9pm with Seisiun at 10pm so bring your instrument or dancing shoes. Adults: €10. LATE THOMAS MURPHY
The death occurred of Thomas Murphy, formerly of Knightstown Mountmellick on April 24 at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Illinois. Tom was born on September 11 1930 in Knightstown and lived in Mountmellick until April 25 1954, when he left Cobh on the vessel Georgic for America. He became a US citizen in 1958 after serving in the US army and lived in Chicago where he was a union bricklayer. Tom is mourned by his sons Tom (Chicago) and Michael (Wisconsin), daughter Maureen (Illinois), brother Willie, sisters Pauline, Margaret, May and Breda (all in Ireland and England), relatives and friends.. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Mary, brothers Mick, Sean and PJ, sister Eileen and nephew Brian. Services were held at Gibbons Funeral Home in Chicago and interment was at Maryhill Cemetery, Chicago.
