Will be held on Saturday July 12 from 10am to 3pm in the Macra Hall in aid of the Neurosurgery Fund at Beaumont Hospital. Home baked cakes, buns, tarts and bread for sale. A raffle will also be held. Your support appreciated.

READING CHALLENGE

The library summer reading challenge ‘Mythical Maze’ has begun. To take part, sign up, read 6 books of your own choosing and you will receive your Mythical Maze chart with a wristband and stickers throughout the summer.

LOOMING

Looming in the Library in on Tuesdays in July and August from 3pm to 4pm. Just bring along your loom bands and share your designs.

WEBSITE LAUNCH

Business Mountmellick will officially launch their new website on Tuesday July 8 from 7pm to 9pm in the library. Guest speaker Bobby Kerr of Dragon’s Den will attend.

MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL

Careers in Music summer school will provide a fun and exciting 5 day workshop for intermediate and advanced musicians and singers. Book on careersinmusic@gmail.com.

COMHALTAS

Members went on a trip to Brú Boru Cultural Centre in Cashel recently and enjoyed a highly entertaining evening with a tour of the exhibition followed by a show of music, dance and song. The evening finished with an informal session in their Teach Cheoil where our musicians joined with other members of the show and audience members. It was agreed that we should do this or similar again as everyone enjoyed the night. Group music practice continues for the Leinster Fleadh in Moate. We are hoping that members will attend the Portlaoise summer session on the Thursday after the Leinster Fleadh. All welcome.

The PTAA Matt Talbot pilgrimage to Knock is on Sunday July 20. Bus leaves Mountrath at 8am and arrived in O’Connell Square Mountmellick at 9am. Contact any Council member.

St Joseph’s cemetery mass will be celebrated on Sunday July 27 at 3pm.

POTTERY WORKSHOP

THE ROCK GAA

Croagh Patrick fundraiser

There is a climb of Croagh patrick next Saturday July 12 to raise money for Robert Dempsey from Mountmellick, who is recovering from an accident in Australia. To join in and get a sponsorship car call 085 2071844.

Bats Workshop

Irish Wildlife Trust Laois-Offaly Branch have a workshop for those interested in helping with the Daubenton’s Bat Survey, on Wednesday, July 23 at 8pm in the MDA, Mountmellick.

On the night there will be an indoor introduction to the species, survey methods and related info, followed by an outdoor practical site visit (across car park to Owenass River) to put your new skills into practice. Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive Service needs volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from chemoptherapy in Dublin. Volunteers needed to pick up patients at their homes, drive them to hospital and pick them up later to bring them home. Free to patients and driver expenses covered. James fintan lalor

This year’s James Fintan Lalor School takes place on October 17 and 18 at the Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise. Just some of the speakers confirmed so far include John Lonergan, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, Sean O’Rourke of RTÉ.
