MISSION ALIVE COFFEE MORNING

The Mission Alive group will hold a coffee morning/cake sale in Fr Noel Dunphy’s house on Friday August 1 from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Donations of cakes on morning of sale welcome. All proceeds go to the Orphanage Project in Lusaka in Zambia.

EXHIBITION

Artist Caroline Conway who specialises in print making will feature in the library gallery throughout July, all welcome.

READING CHALLENGE

The library summer reading challenge ‘Mythical Maze’ has begun. To take part, sign up, read 6 books of your own choosing and you will receive your Mythical Maze chart with a wristband and stickers throughout the summer.

COMIC DRAWING WORKSHOP

On Thursday July 24 author Alan Nolan, will hold a comic drawing workshop at 11am. This is suitable for ages 9 to 12, booking is essential.

LOOMING

Looming in the Library in on Tuesdays in July and August from 3pm to 4pm. Just bring along your loom bands and share your designs.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Preparations are underway for the registration of our 26 athletes going to the All Ireland Community Games finals in Athlone in August. The first weekend we have swimmers and cross-country participation and the second weekend we have both individual track and field and relay teams taking part. If there are any businesses out there who would like to sponsor Mountmellick Community Games in having so many athletes taking part please contact 085 713 8940.

AGE FRIENDLY LAOIS

Laois County Council invite all those aged 50 years and over to a public consultation about plans to make Laois, its towns and villages, more age friendly. This takes place in MDA on Wednesday July 30 from 11am to 1pm.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

Mondays: Boccia in Macra Hall 7.30pm.  Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon (free bus from MDA at 11.15am). Wednesdays: Art Exhibition: Mountmellick Active Retirement artists are showcasing their oil and acrylic art work in the Mill Restaurant until Wednesday August 13. All welcome along to view the work. Some are for sale. On Wednesday July 23 there will be no morning meeting. A social evening tea will be held in the Mill Restaurant at 7pm. This will be our last gathering of the year. Thursdays: music and song in St. Vincent’s Hospital. Fridays: ‘Go for Life Games’ Macra Hall 7.30pm.

On Tuesday August 5 and Thursday August 7 the Craft Group, in preparation for Christmas Fair, will meet in Wolfe Tone Court 10am to noon.

MEN’S SHED

Men’s Shed will meet weekly in Wolf Tone Court until they get their own premises. They are investigating obtaining premises, shed or disused building that can house the tools of the trade. Anyone who can assist in this please contact 087 6578736. At the meeting on Tuesday July 29 at Wolf Tone Court, they will travel to the Slieve Blooms and climb the Ridge of Capard (approx. 1 hour). New members always welcome.

YARN BOMBING

All those interested in adding some colour to our town should come along to a yarn bombers meeting, held every Tuesday night in the Methodist Hall from 8pm. No needle skills necessary as all are willing to share their knowledge. All donations of wool gratefully accepted

CEMETERY MASS

St Joseph’s cemetery mass will be celebrated on Sunday July 27 at 3pm. We would appreciate if everyone could have their graves tidied for this day.

THE ROCK GAA

Coaching of Gaelic football continues for u6, u8, u10 u12 & u14 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm at the Rock. New players are welcome.

FAMILY FUN DAY

On Sunday August 3 The Rock GAA will hold a summer fun day in the Club grounds from 2pm to 6pm. Free admission, all welcome.

The highlight of the afternoon’s activities will be our duck race. Buy a duck for €5, enter it into the Triogue river and watch it ‘swim’ home in the hope of winning one of three great prizes. Join us for some family fun with bouncy castles, novelty races and stalls, food, music and much more.

lATE NOELLE JESTIN

There was much regret at the death of Mrs Noelle Jestin (neé Hayes) of Derryguile and formerly of Birr on Friday July 11. Noelle will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Remains reposed at her residence until removal to St Paul’s Church on Saturday evening. Funeral service was held at 3pm on Sunday with burial afterwards in the adjoining churchyard. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Noelle’s sons William, John, Eddie, Richard and Stewart, family, relatives and friends.
