LOCAL TIDY TOWNS
Judging in the annual local tidy towns competition is underway. The judges will be deciding on best area, best garden, shop front etc. All are encouraged to maintain their high standard. The town is improving yearly and is beautifully colourful with flowers.
World W1 COMMEMORATIONS
Mountmellick WWI Research and Commemoration Group are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War, starting on Friday August 22 with a concert by Emer Dunne and Drua in Mountmellick Arts Centre. Tickets €10 from Arts Centre, MDA, Horan’s Shop or committee. An Ecumenical Service is in St Joseph’s Church on Sunday August 24 at 3pm, followed by a march to the museum to launch an exhibition of memorabilia. On Sunday August 31 at 2.30pm all will assemble at St Joseph’s Church to march to the library for an unveiling of a WW1 Memorial with the names of local men who died in the war. Afterwards Sheila Coyle presents ‘Stories from World War One’, a performance in the Macra Hall.

HERITAGE WEEK EXHIBITIONS
There will be exhibitions on Saturday August 23 in the Owenass Hall from 11.30am to 5pm. Rediscover Your Heritage includes photographs, pictures, maps, histories, stories and books on Mountmellick. A History of St Paul’s School exhibited by the students includes the student strike in 1944. Mountmellick Work includes new, antique, modern and traditional pieces.
HERITAGE WEEK TALKS
A series of talks and panel discussions on Mountmellick and World War 1, the Great Hunger and the Memories of Mountmellick Town Council will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday August 25, 26 and 28 from 8pm to 9.30pm in the Arts Centre. Contact 086 7914933
St Joseph’s Cemetery Committee thanks all who tidied their graves and supported their collection. They thank Donie Williams, Martin Lawlor, P J Kearns, Mountmellick GAA, Civil Defence, Gardaí and all who helped out on the day and during the year.
The library summer reading challenge ‘Mythical Maze’ has begun. To take part, sign up, read 6 books of your own choosing and receive a Mythical Maze chart with a wristband and stickers.

Preparations are underway for the registration of Mountmellick Community Games’ 26 athletes going to the All Ireland finals in Athlone in August. The first weekend they have swimmers and cross-country participation and the second weekend both individual track and field and relay teams are taking part. Mountmellick Active Retirement artists are showcasing their oil and acrylic art work in the Mill Restaurant until Wednesday August 13. Come and enjoy the good meals served daily and view the work. Some are for sale.
Men’s shed will be taking a break until Monday August 25 at 7.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. They are investigating obtaining a premises or shed or disused building that can house the tools of the trade. Anyone who can assist in this please call 087 6578736. New members welcome.
MOUNTMELLICK UTD AFC LOAN SCHEME
To facilitate the purchase of land next to Conor Davis Park to develop a training facility, the club is asking participants to contribute to a Club Loan Scheme. The cost of the land is €6,500. They are looking for individuals or groups to loan €100 each, with all monies guaranteed to be repaid. Each week over sixty-five weeks one contribution will be returned in full until all have been paid back. The club thanks those who have contributed to the scheme already and hope that more local people, groups or businesses will take this chance to help in its continued development by participating in this risk-free initiative.
