MONSTER AUCTION The Rock GAA will hold a monster auction on Sunday November 18 from 1pm onwards in the clubhouse. A drugs information and awareness talk for parents by Detective Scully of Portlaoise Drugs Unit will take place in Mountmellick Community School on Tuesday November 13 at 7.30pm. This informative talk will cover recognizing drug taking, knowing the signs, how to recognize various drugs etc. It is a free talk for parents of all school going children, both primary and secondary level. All are welcome


The knitting circle meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to noon in the library. Drop in for cuppa and a chat. All donations of wool would be greatly appreciated.


Classes return tonight after the Halloween break. The Cupla Focal Irish language starter workshop will now start on Tuesday November 14 at 7.50pm to 8.05pm. Names can be left at the class tonight if interested. Further information from 085 7138940.


Laois GAA will host a gala fashion show in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel on Friday November 9. Laois footballers and hurlers will showcase the latest fashions along with some of the top models from around the county, including the 2012 Laois Rose Niamh Bracken.

A pre champagne reception will take place in Sally Gardens, Portlaoise from 6pm until 8pm with the fashion show starting at 9pm in the Heritage Hotel.

There will be entertainment on the night and also a golden opportunity to win a week’s break in Spain with free accommodation and €200 towards the costs of flights.

Tickets at €20 each are available in the Laois GAA offices, Sally Gardens, The Pantry and the Heritage Hotel and also from participating shops which include Kearns & Cuddy Menswear Ltd, Annie Apple, Bridal Hall and Hat Hire Portlaoise.

The recent exhibition of the work of the art group, which was launched in the Museum on Tuesday October 23 and was open for viewing on the following three days, was a great success and many people came to see the beautiful paintings. Congratulations to all involved.

Our weekly activities are Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: there will be no dancing classes on Wednesday October 24 and Wednesday October 31. Dancing resumes on Wednesday November 7 from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court.

Thursdays: art classes in Wolfe Tone Court from 2pm to 4pm and music and song in St Vincent’s hospital from 2pm to 4pm.

The November outing to the Titanic exhibition in Belfast is on Friday November 30. The bus for this will leave MDA at 8.15am. The annual Christmas dinner dance will be held on Friday December 7 in the Gandon Inn.


Mountmellick Macra attended the Macra na Feirme annual conference over the bank holiday weekend. A great time was had by all and well done to the Waterford Macra committee for organising such an enjoyable weekend.

Congratulations to the Durrow-Abbeyleix team who won the final of the Know your Ag competition.

Capers county round is on Sunday December 9 and rehearsals are in full swing at the moment. Best of luck to all involved. Well done to the participants who took part in the welding competition last Thursday.

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. This is being held in the Grand Hotel Moate on Saturday November 10 at 8pm proceeds in aid of the PTAA. The prize fund of €1000 is divided as follows 1 €500, 2 €300 and 3 €200. Tables of four are €50 to include hot finger food.


Mountmellick Utd FC held soccer matches on Saturday October 27 to mark Football against Racism in Europe (FARE) Week 2012.

During Saturday’s event, four Midlands Schoolboy/girl league matches where played. Mountmellick U16s v Kilavilla, Mountmellick U14s v East Galway, Mountmellick U10 v Rosenallis and Mountmellick U14 girls v Tullamore Utd. All of the players wore bibs with the slogan ‘United against Racism’, as well as ‘Many Voices One Goal - Football against Racism in Europe’ wrist bands.

Speaking at the FARE event in Conor Davis Park, John Nelson, juvenile club secretary explained how as Ireland is now a multicultural society this was a way to encourage all to understand diversity and appreciate each other’s cultures. He thanked all the players, coaches, supporters and match officials for their participation.

Mountmellick Utd FC was among up to 100 groups including schools, football clubs and community organisations from throughout Ireland who took part in FARE Week 2012. The week is an initiative of the FARE Network and is supported by UEFA and in Ireland by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the Department of Justice and Equality. Mountmellick Utd FC was congratulated by Des Tomlinson, national co-ordinator for Intercultural Football at the FAI for their involvement.

Hair-raising fun for cancer care

‘Cool Guys & Pink-haired Ladies’ is the fun name for a new group who hope to raise €10,000 in November for The Cuisle Centre, who provide support for cancer patients and their families.

The whole of Mountmellick and surrounding areas are encouraged to get involved, as unfortunately cancer has touched so many. Headshaves, beards, moustaches, pink hairdye are the order of the day, with a pink ‘wig walk’ planned for November 18, and a gala fundraising night on December 1 to round off the month.
