COMMEMORATION

The Mountmellick WW1 Commemoration Group announces two weeks of activities to commemorate the men from the greater Mountmellick area who fought and died in WW1. With 100 of the 600 men whom we believe fought in WW1 from this area having died, Mountmellick’s links with this war are very strong. Unfortunately with the changing political attitudes of 1918 and the early years of the State it has taken until now for us to talk openly and honestly of the sacrifices and hardships endured by these men.

WORLD WAR 1 EXHIBITION

WW1 memorabilia is on exhibit in the MDA Museum until Saturday September 6. Items include a 1916 Renault car (of which only 3 survive today) used by the French army during the war. There is also a Roll of Honour with information on all in the Mountmellick area who died, including the sets of brothers, along with the fathers and sons who perished during the war.

SCOUTS

Scouts have taken a break for August. In January they enjoyed a weekend in Srahan centre and tested their skills in backwoods cooking and pioneering and used their compass skills to hike across Ard Erin. In May they competed with troops from around the Slieve Bloom area at the county camp in Tullamore and were highly commended for their skills. Also in May they participated in water activities in Birr.   A trip to Tayto Park with the cub scouts was enjoyed in June. In July they joined the Laois Walking festival with a 9.5k walk in Ballybrittas, a 10k in Clonaslee and 8.5k in Emo. They enjoyed other activities and badge work. A section of the scout troop with Scout Leader Winnie O’Reilly and Cub Leader Annette Dwyer will attend the World Jamboree in Japan in 2015. Winnie and Annette have been the driving force behind a fund raising drive to subsidise the trip for the scouts as it is an expensive but will be worthwhile and enjoyable. All leaders, members, parents and friends are very supportive and helping with the fundraising. So far they have held raffles, bucket collections, a dance in the Mellick Inn and car boot sales. Next car boot sale is on Sunday September 7, €10 per car, call Annette 087 9438430. Also will be a table quiz and race night. We thank all who supported the events. Registration night is Thursday September 4 at 7.30pm in the Owenass hall for new beavers (6 years), cubs and scouts and for existing members who are returning in September to each section. A new Venture Unit for 15 year olds will start in September, register on same night.
