FARMERS SERVICE

The annual blessing of the plough and prayers for the farming year take place at Saint Peter’s Church of Ireland Church in Mountrath at 7 pm on Sunday January 12. Mr Richard Codd from Tullow will be the speaker. All farmers and others will be welcome, whatever their parish or denomination.

THE SIX MARYS

A play ‘The Six Marys’ written and performed by Jean Farrell taking a comical look at life growing up in Ireland in the 50s & 60s will be performed in Mountrath Golf Club on Friday January 17 at 8pm. Local entertainers will also perform. Clonenagh NS

A fundraising Vintage Run or Clonenagh N.S., Mountrath was held on Saturday, 28th December, based at Sheeran’s Pub, Coolrain. The weather was fantastic and this was reflected by the impressive turnout of vehicles, with over 80 participating. There was a tractor run, with over 50 tractors participating, both new and old.

There was also a lovely array of vintage cars and a few motorcycles. The run was followed by food and entertainment in Sheeran’s, with the merriment continuing on into the night. There was a raffle and an auction on the night as well. The organisers would like to thank all who supported the day, the sponsors and those who donated items for the auction, as well as all those who gave freely of their time to ensure that the day was so successful.

Laois Hospice AGM

The Laois Hospice Foundation Annual Public Meeting will take place on Friday, January 17 at 8.00pm in the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise. Special Guests on the night are Mr Sean O’Rourke and Ms Eileen Dunne, RTE. Why not come along and hear about hospice services in Laois and where the monies collected are spent. This should be a very enjoyable and stimulating night. Everybody is welcome to this meeting and your support would be very much appreciated. Refreshments will be served on the night. Late KEVIN PETERS

Condolences to the family of the late Kevin Peters, Campclone, Kilbricken, Mountrath, who died unexpectedly, at St James’s Hospital Dublin on December 25. Predeceased by his brother Matthew, deeply regretted by his sorrowing sons Brandon and Aaron, daughter Zoe, parents Mick and Teresa, brothers Brendan, JJ, Jack, Mark, and Colm, sisters Marie and Susan extended family and friends. Reposed at his parents home (Campclone) on Saturday. Removal to St Edmunds Church Castletown, for Funeral Mass at 2pm, followed by burial in St Fintan’s Cemetery, Mountrath.

Knitting Club: The knitting group continues to meet every Friday morning 10:30-12:30. New members always welcome.

LAOIS HOSPICE

The sale of jam continues in Costcutters and Phelan’s Shop Castletown. We would like to thank everyone for their support for this worthy cause buying jam donating fruit and jars. The sale of jam continues in these shops.

DOG FOULING

Dog fouling is a growing litter problem in the town, every path in the town is covered in it daily. It is a nightmare for walkers and a health hazard for young children. Local awareness to identify the dog owners responsible is required. Please contact the Council’s freephone litter hotline @ 1800 32 32 30 with specific details if witnessed i.e. name and address of dog owner, location, time and date.
