A plaque commemorating the Mountmellick men killed in the First Word War was at one time located in St Joseph’s Church--but it was removed, apparently on the orders of parish priest Fr T H Burbage, an ardent nationalist and friend of Eamon De Valera.

So incensed was ex-soldier Tom Lalor by this move that he refused to go to Mass ever again.
