Gavin is son of Peter and Michelle Shortall. Gavin celebrated his success with his parents, his sister Emma and grandmother Angela Conroy, his family and many friends. The parents Council in Colaiste Iosagain are holding an information evening on suicide awareness for parents and teenagers on Wednesday December 5 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Colaiste Iosagain. Josephine Rigney resource officer with the HSE will be in attendance. All are welcome.

Portarlington Lions club have set a date for their Christmas fair and toy Sale. It will take place on December 1 in the community centre between 2pm - 5pm. Anyone wishing to add their own stall are welcome to do so at a cost of €10. Everyone is very welcome, we expect a large volume of people on the day and best of all. All money raised goes directly back into the community in which it came from. Santa Claus will be attending our Christmas fair too.
Port’s Vision 2020 plan presents a vision for the town’s future, a foundation of the Town’s regeneration and growth up to the year 2020. It focuses on five sectors to stimulate job growth: business, education, community resilience, tourism and agriculture. Five action groups have been formed as a result of consultations, each having objectives and tasks identified for their sector to stimulate growth. Two meetings have been scheduled and we would appreciate your contribution. Meeting for The Gathering takes place on Wednesday November 21 at the Oriel House, Main Street.

Condolences to the family of Tom Tynan, the Old Pound Ballybrittas on the death of Tom on Thursday November 8 at the Midlands Hospital Portlaoise. Predeceased by his wife Joan (Murphy) a number of years ago, he will be sadly missed by his son Tom and daughter Mary, his extended family and many friends. Requiem mass took place at St John’s Church Killenard on Saturday November 10, with burial after in the adjoining cemetery. May Tom rest in peace.

Port launch of award winning poet
Award winning Portarlington based poet Jean O’Brien will have a local launch of her latest collection Merman (Salmon Publishing). The launch is being held on Thursday December 6 at 7.30 and will be hosted by The French 1/4 restaurant in French Church Street, Portarlington from 7.30 onwards. Complimentary refreshments will be served. The new collection, O’Brien’s fourth, is named after the poem that won the prestigious Arvon International Award in 2010. O’Brien is a regular contributor to RTE’s Sunday Miscellany and its producer Cliodhna Ni Anluain said of Jean’s latest collection that it contains “appealing directness’. O’Brien has previously been the Writer-in-Residence for County Laois, and last year shared the stage with Booker prize-winning author John Banville during the Laois Leaves Festival held in Stradbally. The launch is free and everyone is welcome.
