Ordination

Congratulations to Sean Hyland who was ordained to the priesthood in St Michael’s Church on Sunday last July 13 with Bishop Denis Nulty officiating. The people of the parish wish Fr Sean all the best for the future.

Sean’s first mass will be held on this Wednesday July 16 at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Church, and the community of Portarlington are invited to celebrate with Sean in the GAA Centre at 8.30. Refreshments and music on the night. Please come along, as Sean would love to see everyone and to join him in his celebration.

Lord Mayor

Congratulation and well done to Paul Cleary Ballymorris who won the Port Lord Mayor competition last Thursday July 10 in the Orchard Hotel. Paul represented the local Special Olympics for mayor. A big well done to all the other contestants who represented their own clubs. Also well done to Port Lion’s Club who organised the event.

Dancing

Dancing continues every Monday night in The Gandon Inn, Emo till midnight in aid of Port St Vincent de Paul. Music in the coming weeks: July 21 John & Terry. July 28 Tony Bird. Come along for a great night out. Admission €5. All welcome.

Fundraiser

Wanted: children’s clothes, toys, books, DVDs etc in aid of Portarlington baby and toddler fundraiser for Ryan Brennan. Ryan was born in December 2013 with Mosaic Trisomy 9 syndrome, a rare chromosomal condition. Ryan will require a lot of support from Temple Street hospital over the coming months. We are having a children’s clothes/toy sale to raise funds for Ryan’s future care. We would really appreciate all donations for our sale, and collections will be facilitated through Karen Purcell 087 2638140 and Sandra Gavin on 086 3032824, or they can be dropped off at the group on Thursday July 17 from 11-1pm in the community centre.

Sympathy

It was with great sadness that the people of Portarlington heard of the death of June Culliton (nee Meagher) who passed away at her home in Portlaoise on July 6 with her devoted family.

June had worked as a physiotherapist in the Primary Care in Portarlington for many years. She was always known for her gentle and caring manner to everyone she met in her work and outside also. June will be sadly missed by her daughter Susie, son Barry, her fiancé Philip Lyons, her parents Philip and Noreen, brothers, sisters and her extended family and many friends. Requiem mass for June took place on Wednesday July 9 at SS Peter & Pauls Church Portlaoise, with burial after in SS Peter & Paul’s Cemetery. May June rest in peace.

Sympathy

Deepest sympathy to the family of Patricia Burke (nee Ward) Bishopswood Portarlington and late of Clondalkin Dublin who passed away on July 3. Patricia will be sadly missed by her husband Damien, her daughters, sons, grandchildren, her extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place on Friday July 11 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception Clondalkin, with burial in Newcastle Cemetery. May Patricia rest in peace.

Public Meeting

Public meeting of Portarlington Combined Residents Association will take place on Monday July 21 at 7.30pm in the community centre. All residents groups are invited to attend. St Conleths

Training times: U8 U10 U12 U14 training on Saturdays in O’Dempsey’s at 10am. U14 training on Wednesdays at 6pm, U16 training on Tuesday at 7pm, also minor and senior training Tuesday at 8pm and Sunday mornings at 8.30. Gaelic for mother’s and others training on Sundays at 6.20pm in O’Dempsey’s also. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the girls U8 to senior level on a great season so far. Cycle Challenge

Sunday August 31 all roads will lead to Fisherstown Ballybrittas County Laois for the running of the 100km cycle challenge. Other events on the day include a 50km cycle and a short run for families and individuals. High Nellies also welcome. Start and finish at Fishermans Inn where refreshments will be served to all afterwards. Further information contact 087 2654001.

World War 1

The 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War occurs this year and to mark the event an ecumenical evening will be held on August 29 as part of Heritage Week 2014. For more, contact David Orford 057 8623852 or Rev Leslie Stevenson.

Junior Tennis Club

Mini fun tennis for under 7s every Monday and Thursday 2.30pm to 3.30pm. There are some places still available in Tony Lok’s tennis coaching classes. All levels and ages catered for. Ring 087 1231135 if interested.

Every Monday at 8pm there is social tennis for adults. This is now well attended and lots of enjoyable tennis is played. For those adults who want to try out tennis there is a free session every Thursday at 11am followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. Rackets and balls are provided. Small children and toddlers/babies are welcomed to the club at this time. Some of the little ones are now playing tennis on our mini courts
