PATTERN PROJECT

‘The Pattern Project’ is an exhibition of artworks created by 3rd, 4th & 5th class students from St Patrick’s BNS Portarlington. The artworks were created as part of a six week drawing and printmaking project in conjunction with emerging local artist Aidan Byrne. The exhibition will be held upstairs at Lyles, Main Street, Portarlington. The official opening is on Thursday February 13 at 8pm. The exhibition will run February 14-16 (inclusive) 12pm – 3pm daily. All are welcome to attend and your support would be greatly appreciated.

Port Social Services

The 43rd AGM of Portarlington Social Services/Meals on Wheels took place on Friday January 31 in the Social Services Centre. Ann (Bourke) Dunne, chairperson welcomed everyone to the first AGM in the newly refurbished centre. She also asked for a minutes silence for all those connected with the Service who passed away during the past year, especially to Pauline Hooks who passed away recently. Pauline did a lot of work for Meals on Wheels over the years. Last year Geraldine O’Reilly (secretary) reported that 4,800 were cooked and delivered. The committee would like to thank everyone who helps to support the continued running of the Meals on Wheels. From the 60 plus volunteers who deliver meals 3 days a week. The Hostesses who help at the weekly bingo on a Wednesday night. Thanks also to our cooks who prepare nourishing meals for our clients. A big thanks to all who help with the funding of the centre. To the people of Portarlington for their generous donations during our flag days, also to groups who hold events to raise money. The biggest event in the past year was the Jigs & Reels last October which raised €6,000 for the centre. A big thanks to all the people who participated in the event, the dancers Kara Burbage for training them for the night. Also to Margaret Guijt Lawlor and the PCDA for organising the event.

The Portarlington Social Services bingo resumed on Wednesday February 5 at 8.30pm.

Race Night

Race night/fun night in aid of Portarlington Community First Aid Responders Group will take place in Jimmy’s Bar Main Street on Friday February 15 at 8pm.

School Quiz

The annual Portarlington Credit Union primary school quiz took place on Friday January 31. Teams from eight primary schools in the area took part. Winners of the U11 category were Walsh Island. The winners of the U13 category were Emo. We would like to wish both teams the best of luck in the next stage of the competition.

Sympathy

Deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Tony (Thatcher) Coleman who passed away at his home in Bracklone St on Monday February 3. Tony will be sadly missed by his loving wife Maura (nee Coughlan) his daughters Mary (Foster) and Edel, his sons Joe, Colm, Timmy, Eamon, Thomas and Conor, his sisters Christina (O’Connor) and Maureen (Brennan) Kilkenny, his grandchildren, extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place on Wednesday February 5 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. Tony was known as one of the Midlands’ best known GAA referees. A guard of honour from members of Port GAA was formed at his funeral. He also trained both Portarlington and O’Dempseys, and had a passion for boxing, winning a Leinster boxing title in the 50s. He was also a member of Portarlington Athletic Club, and won numerous road races. Tony spent most of his working life working at the ESB power station in Portarlington. He was 87 and the oldest surviving member of Portarlington Labour branch.

Sympathy

Sincere Condolences to the family of James (Jim) Grehan Shanderry, and late of Cappalane, Rosenallis who died on Wednesday February 5 at the Regional Hospital Tullamore. Jim will be sadly missed by his loving wife Betty, his son James, daughters Judith, Naoimh, Thelma and Sharon, grandchildren, his extended family and many friends. Requiem mass took place on Friday February 7 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. Jim worked for many years with the ESB until his retirement several years ago. Jim was a long time member of the local St Vincent de Paul, Jim worked tirelessly as a member. A guard of honour was formed by his fellow committee members at his removal on Friday.

Camogie Training

Banríon Gaels are holding camogie training for girls of all ages on every Saturday afternoon from 4.30pm to 5.30pm in Portarlington GAA Club hall, McCann Park. 

Tennis Club AGM

Portarlington Lawn Tennis Club AGM will be held in the tennis clubhouse on Thursday March 13 at 8.30pm. All senior and student members and parents/guardians of junior members are invited to attend. Coaching with Tony Lok will resume on Tuesday April 1. For further information ring 087 1231135.

St Conleths GAA

U 16 minor and senior training on Friday Nights in O’ Dempsey’s at 8pm. Also U14s are back training in McCann Park Portarlington at 10pm on Saturday mornings. Any new members are welcome.
