The Portlaoise Credit Union 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place at the Heritage Hotel on Monday, January 28. The delay the AGM is largely due to a new Central Bank of Ireland requirement for Credit Unions to submit audited accounts for each financial year and await their approval before arranging AGM’s.

The first meeting of Laois Community Games will take place at the Heath on Monday, January 21 at 8pm. Phase one as follows: badminton, chess/draughts, handball (one wall), indoor soccer and table tennis. Area results to be brought to February meeting to be held by St Mary’s, Portlaoise on February 11. Phase two as follows: art, cross country mixed, distance relay, duathon, model making, Rugby; Hybrid + Tag+mini and table quiz. KARATE

There was no winner of the Lotto Jacpot when the draw was made on Thursday, January 10. Numbers drawn: 05, 19, 21, 15. The match 3s won €67 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

PARISH NOVENA

Portlaoise Parish Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs from February 13 to April 10 Ash Wednesday 3 for nine weeks every Wednesday at 7:30pm. Petitions will be remembered and prayed for throughout the nine weeks. Speakers include: Hector O hEochagáin 2FM (February 13), Frances Black singer (February 20), Brian Cody hurling coach (February 27), Brian Crowley MEP (March 6), John Longergan retired prison governor (March 13), Mary Kennedy RTE Nationwide (March 20), Fr Liam Lawton composer(March 27), Joanne O’Riordan Young Person of the Year (April 3), Johnny Murtagh jockey (April 10).

THE HEATH 10K Run

The Great Heath 10k takes place on Sunday, January 20 at 11am. Online entry forms can be found at runireland.com, with limited late entries on the day. Technical race t-shirts are available to buy and all runners are chip-timed, provided with a finishing medal plus an ample supply of free food and refreshments. A big thanks also to all marshals who helped out last year and they are encouraged to get involved again this year.

COUCH TO 5KM

Portlaoise Athletic Club is running a 10 week fitness programme ‘COUCH TO 5K’ which is open to all levels of fitness. It will end with a 5k run “STREETS OF PORTLAOISE” on St Patrick’s Day. Check out Portlaoise Athletic Club on Facebook for details.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Christmas Tree recycling is available at Kyltalesha & Portarlington Recycling Centre until the end of January 2013 free of charge. Usual gate fee applies for other recyclable materials. Remember to remove lights and decorations before recycling.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Portlaoise Pantomime Group will present their 29th annual production “Jack and the Beanstalk” in the Dunamaise Arts Centre Portlaoise. The panto runs in January from 19-26. Matinees on Saturday 19, Sunday, 20, and Saturday 26 at 2.30pm. Shows nightly at 8pm. in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets are now available from the Dunamaise Box Office.

Suicide Prevention.

A 2 day workshop designed to teach participants the skills to be in a position to recognise and help someone whose life may be at risk will take place in the Parish Centre on January 16/17. TEEN SPIRIT

Teen Spirit Kandle invites teenage singers - male and female - to take part in a Youth Concert in April with other teenagers in the Diocese. Songs by Adele, U2, Queen, Hillsong and lots more. The aim is that there will be teenager participants from all the Parishes (56) in the Diocese. Information session at the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Friday, January 18.

LATE JOSEPH O’BRIEN

Condolences to the family of the late Joseph O’Brien of the Ridge Rd, Portlaoise who passed away on Monday, January 7 peacefully at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise. Deeply regretted by his loving brother Stephen and sister Lilly, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at the Regional Hospital, Portlaoise with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Burial afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

LATE ANNE TERRITT

Condolences to the family of the late Anne ‘Connie’ Territt (nee Corrigan), of 15 Dr Murphy’s Place, Portlaoise who passed away on Monday, January 7. Beloved wife of the late Séan, she is deeply regretted by her loving sons, daughters, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposing at her daughter (Mary Martin’s) residence in Corrig, Stradbally before removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Parish Church, Portlaoise for Requiem Mass last Wednesday with Burial afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.

late Maud White

Condolences to the family of the late Maud White, (née Kenny) of Hazeldene, Clonminan Rd., Portlaoise, who passed away on Tuesday, January 8. Beloved wife of the late Harry, and much loved mother of Hazel, Ivan and June, she is also deeply regretted by, brothers Jimmy, George and the late Richard, extended family, relatives and friends. Funeral service on Thursday 10at St Peter’s Church of Ireland, Portlaoise with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
