PORTLAOISE pARISH cHRISTMAS

Tuesday (Christmas Eve): Children’s Masses at 4.30pm and 6.30pm. Both of these Masses are mainly for the little people who have to get home to bed and be asleep early on Christmas Eve. We are aiming the 4.30pm at children who have not yet received First Holy Communion so up to 2nd Class. And the 6.30pm at children from 3rd class upwards. All are welcome.

Other Christmas eve masses: 7pm Mass in Scoil Bhríde, Knockmay; 9pm Our Solemn Mass for Christmas Eve.

Christmas Day: Parish Church 8.30am, 10am, 11.15am and 12.30pm; The Heath 9.30am; Ratheniska 10am.

Advent prayer

Night prayers for 15 minutes every evening during advent at 7.30pm at SS Peter & Paul’s Parish Church. Sunday evening prayer and benediction every Sunday from 6pm.

Battle of D’Town

Portlaoise Shamrocks V Towerhill ROvers. Charity soccer match, St Stephens day 11am, St Fintans Hospital, Portlaoise. All proceeds to Pieta house, suicide and self harm awareness charity. Support greatly appreciated.

Parish lotto

There was no winner of the jackpot on December 12. Nos: 15,16,18,29. The 11 match 3s won €91. Next week’s jackpot is €20,000. Final draw of year on December 19. First draw 2014 on January 2.

The Heath IFA

The Heath IFA branch held their Agm on December 10. The meeting was well attended. Guest speaker - Joe Burke from Bord Bia who gave a detailed report on markets for beef and sheep for 2014. Both John Treacy and Gearoid Booth were re-elected as chairman and secretary respectively. The election for President and vice president of the IFA took place with over 50 members voting.

Couch to 5km

Portlaoise Athletic Club’s 10 week Couch to 5k programme returns again to Portlaoise on Thursday, January 9 at 6pm. It will end with the” Streets Of Portlaoise 5k road race” on St Patrick’s day. Comhaltas concert

Portlaoise Comhaltas Christmas Concert at the Dunamaise Theatre on Tuesday Dec 17. Light refreshments served and all lovers of trad are welcome. Members assemble at 6.30pm. Concert 7-9pm approx.

December: Wed 18 Members only Annual Christmas Dinner Party from 1.30 pm onwards at Parish Centre. Mulled Wine at reception. Sat 21; Final members Carols performance from 3pm - 4 pm at Tesco. All proceeds from our carol singing to three local charities. Indoor Bowls continue every Monday at St Mary’s Sports Hall from 3pm - 5pm (Note new times). Panto Time

Portlaoise Pantomime’s Treasure Island runs from Saturday January 18 to Saturday January 25 next with matinees on January 18, 19 & 25 at 2.30pm (sharp). Nightly shows at 8pm in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets from the Dunamaise.

Late William (Billy) FARRELL

Condolences to the family of the late William (Billy) Farrell of Hillview Drive and St Johns Sq, Portlaoise who died on Sunday, December 8. Deeply regretted by wife Ann, daughters Jessica and Christine, and son William, brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Portlaoise hospital. Removal to Ss. Peter and Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Interment afterwards in Ss. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Donations if desired to the Oncology Unit at Tullamore Regional Hospital.

Late John ARRIGAN

Condolences to the family of the late John Arrigan of Newpark, Portlaoise, and late of Cappoquin, Waterford who died on December 8 suddenly at the Ulster Hospital. John (ex ESB), beloved husband of Rita and dearly loved dad to Deirdre, Pat, Damien, and Nuala and father in law of the late Louise. Deeply regretted by his loving family, brothers, Paddy, Billy, Jimmy, Martin, and sister Kathleen Leddy extended family relatives, neighbours and many friends. Reposed at his residence. Requiem Mass in SS Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise. Donations, if desired, to a charity of your choice.

Late Thomas BLEACH

Condolences to the family of the late Thomas ‘Tom’ Bleach of 1 Hillview, Mountrath Road, Portlaoise, who died on December 6. Husband of the late Frances. Sadly missed by his loving children, Josephine, Helen, Jarlath, and Pauline, sisters Eileen and Sr. Mary Pauline, brother Kevin, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his daughter Helen’s residence in Ballyfin. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church Portlaoise for funeral Mass with burial immediately afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery Portlaoise. Donations if desired to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Dublin.

Late Clare FINNEGAN

Condolences to the family of the late Clare Finegan of Sheetrim House, Castleblayney, Monaghan and Portlaoise who died on December 11, in her 100th year in the care of Oakdale Nursing Home, Portarlington. Sadly missed by her niece Anne Delaney, Highfield, Clonad and the Community of the Daughters of the Cross, Stillorgan, relatives and friends. Laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Castleblaney.
