Panto Time

Portlaoise Pantomime’s Treasure Island runs from Saturday January 18 to Saturday January 25 next with matinees on January 18, 19 & 25 at 2.30pm (sharp). Nightly shows at 8pm in the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Tickets from the Dunamaise. This is a special year for the panto as it is now 30 years young. As in previous years with their reputation for hugely entertaining productions of song, dance, comedy and laughter for all ages this year should be no exception.

This year’s tale has a little turn and twist here and there and a trip or two to exotic faraway place combined with a few surprises along the way.

Jobs meeting

A forum Action Plan for Jobs and Business takes place in Portlaoise chaired by Deputy Charlie Flanagan on Tuesday, January 28 at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel from 5.30pm. The Minister for Enterprise Richard Bruton will be there.

50+Active age

50+ Active Age Group Portlaoise will hold their AGM on Wednesday, January 29 in the Parish Centre at 3pm. All members are encouraged to attend and participate in the proceedings. Remember indoor bowls continue every Monday at 3pm at St Marys Hall and is also open to non-members. So come along and join in the fun

Laois Hospice

The Laois Hospice Foundation annual public meeting takes place on Friday, January 17 at 8pm in the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise. Special guests are Mr Sean O’Rourke and Ms Eileen Dunne of RTÉ. Why not come along and hear about hospice services in Laois and where the monies collected are spent. This should be a very enjoyable and stimulating night.

Everybody is welcome to this meeting and your support would be very much appreciated. Refreshments will be served on the night. Thank you for your continued support to Laois Hospice.

Great Heath 10km

Annual 10km run takes place on Sunday, January 19 with race starting at 11am. Entry online at www.runireland.ie. Late entries on the day.

St Vincent De Paul

The charity wishes to thank all who contributed last year especially to the Christmas appeal. Thanks also to the staff and voluntary workers. Special thanks to Mary Cullen who has retired after 30 years of service.

Mental Health

First Fortnight, Ireland’s only mental health arts festival, arrives in Portlaoise at Dunamaise Arts Centre on Tuesday, January 14 with a screening of the award-winning film Silver Linings Playbook, followed by a post-show discussion, as part of a 10-day arts festival aimed at challenging mental health prejudice and discrimination. Tidy Towns groups work tirelessly to improve the areas in which we live and a few hours a week can make a huge difference. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in your local community you should contact a member or check the local newspapers / newsletter to find out what is happening in your area.

There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when numbers were drawn on January 9. Nos: 3,5, 28, 29. The eight match 3s won €125 each. This week’s jackpot is €12,000.

Gospel choir

Late Stephen CONROY
