Gamblers anonymous

An open meeting will take place in the parish centre Portlaoise on Tuesday 11th March. This is a meeting for people who think they may have an issue with gambling or for those affected by someone’s gambling. Speakers from both Gamblers anonymous and Gam anon (a support group for concerned people).

Retired Nurses Assoc

The Laois-Offaly Branch of the retired nurses association will hold a meeting on Monday, Marcy 10 at 3 PM in the SIPTU offices Portlaoise. National conference in Sligo on May 20/21. Anyone wishing to travel to the conference, contact 057 8622996.

Portlaoise Library to visit Portlaoise Shopping Centre for World Book Day, Thursday, March 6. There will be free books, bookmarks and other special offers too. If in the spirit of the day you wish to join or rejoin the library please come along! If you cannot make it we want to wish you a very happy, booky World Book Day with lots of time for reading! Creative Writing Class continues Friday, March 3 7-4pm for those 13-16 yrs.

Portlaoise Library celebrates Seachtain na Gaeilge with an evening of Irish poetry, music, song and dance. On Wednesday, March 12 at 4.45pm all are welcome.

School of Music

The Inaugural Music Festival on Saturday, March 15 open to all School of Music pupils and pupils receiving tuition at Portlaoise College through Music Generation.

Fashion for cuisle

Parish Novena

The Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs each Wednesday at 7.30pm to April 16. The 9-week Novena in SS Peter and Paul’s Church continues on Wednesday, March 5 Guest Speaker: Brother Kevin, Capuchin Day Centre- Feed the Hungry.

Wheelchair AGM

The AGM of the Laois Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association on Sunday, March 9 at 3pm in the IWA Slieve Bloom Resource Centre, Mountmellick Rd, Portlaoise. All welcome, please support.

Active Age

Singing rehearsals with Nuala Kelly for our forthcoming 10th Anniversary Concert which takes place on April 23 is open to each member. So come along each Wed. from 2 - 3pm sharp and ‘Air your vocals’! Our usual meeting will follow every Wednesday between 3-5 pm at the Parish Centre and will include a wide variety of activities and events to suit everbody. (The more you join in the fun the more you get out of it). Don’t forget the Indoor Bowls continue every Monday at St Mary’s Hall from 3 to 5 pm.

Ash Wednesday/Lent

Ashes will be distributed at 7.30am &10am and from 7pm before Novena on Wednesday, March 5. Simple lenten lunch 1-2pm each Friday during lent at the Parish Centre. Payment for the lunch is a voluntary contribution to the Cuisle Centre.

Heart Foundation

The Portlaoise Athletics Club’s Streets of Portlaoise 5K Road Race on March 17 at 11.30am. Entry is €15 with cash prizes in all race categories. Enter online with Run-Ireland. Late Teresa SEALE

Condolences to the family of the late Teresa (Tess) Seale (nee Butler) of Oldtown, Portlaoise who died on February 26, peacefully at the Regional Hosp. Portlaoise, in her 98th year. Beloved wife of the late William, and dearly loved mam to Michael and John. Deeply regretted by her loving family, brother Joe extended family relatives and friends. Removal from hospital to SS Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise for Requiem Mass followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.

Late Thomas SAUNDERS

Condolences to the family of the late Thomas Saunders of Bluebell Way, Esker Hills, Portlaoise and late of Swords, Co. Dublin, who die on February 24. Beloved husband of Mary and dearly loved son to Anne, loving brother to Derek, James and Aileen. Deeply regretted by extended family and friends at Whitehall College. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest, Portlaoise Hospital. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Late Joseph MALONE

Condolences to the family of the late Joseph Malone, “Cumbria” Green Rd, Portaoise who died on February 24 peacefully in the care of St Vincent’s Hospital, MountMellick. Beloved husband of the late Lilian, and father to Mary Pattwell, Margaret Cotter, Betty Ryan, Tricia Doyle, sons Joe, Seamus, and Dennis, he is deeply regretted by extended family, relatives and friends. Repose at his residence. Removal for Requiem Mass to SS Peter and Paul’s Church. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Donations, if desired, to St Vincents Hospital, Mountmellick.
