Voices Across Cultures Street Market Festival takes place on Main Street Portlaoise over the June Bank Holiday Weekend, May 31-June 1. Saturday 10am-8pm, Sunday 11am-6pm.

Is your child bored? if they are between the ages of 10 - 12 years, why not drop them down to the Portlaoise Youth Cafe (over Subway) only €1 entry on a Thursday evenings 4- 6pm or Saturday 3 - 5pm. They can make new friends, play pool, air hockey and many fun games. Staff and volunteers are fully trained in child protection and are Garda vetted.

Run for Wheelchair
The Laois Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association invites women to run for the charity in the upcoming mini-marathon. The branch will register you and provide a meal on the way home. Call Maura 086 3344722, Eugene 087 253 5924 or any committee member.

The summer Bridge Sessions will commence on Thursday, May 22 in the Sue Ryder Centre, Kilmichy. The starting time will be 730pm sharp. All are welcome
There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on May 15. Winning nos: 5,22,28,31. The 7 match 3s won €143 each. This week’s jackpot is €19,000.

The Sing for Joy Choir to be joined by members of the 10am church choir on Wednesday May 28 at the Parish Centre, at 10.45am. MC Maureen Culleton. Easy listening and familiar songs to sing along with or just sit and listen and enjoy a cuppa. Admission free.
Rosary will be recited at the grotto at SS Peter & Paul’s Church every evening in May at 8pm for intentions.
Portlaoise ICA held their monthly meeting on May 7 at 8 pm in Sue Ryder Centre Portlaoise. Vice President Stella Harding presided over the meeting. Anne our new treasurer was welcomed to the top table. There was a large attendance. Guest speaker on the night was solicitor Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick who gave a very informative talk. Portlaoise guild are taking part in the brown bread competition with sponsorship from Aldi in the search to find the best brown bread baker in Ireland. Overall winner will receive €2,000 in Aldi vouchers, runner - up €1,000, 3rd prize €500, 4th €300. The four semi-finalists will receive €2OO. The 27 county winners will receive €100. Good luck to all the ladies taking part. Laois federation ICA walk takes place on Sunday June 15th at Cuisle Centre at 2 pm. Auqa classes are on going. Ladies are enjoying Zumba with Louise. Three members are travelling to An Grianán in Co Louth for Laois week. The Portlaoise guild hosts the federation meeting in September and Dysart meeting in October. Ladies are going for meal before we break up for the summer. New members always welcome.
The Portlaoise Toastmasters public speaking club meets every 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at the Killeshin Hotel at 8pm. New members always welcome.
Featuring Francis Black and the Roscommon Solstice Choir takes place on June 15 at SS Peter and Paul’s Church Portlaoise. Tickets €10 in aid of Portlaoise St Vincent De Paul and the Rise Foundation. Official launch of the concert on Wednesday May 21 at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre.
Children and teenagers from Portlaoise and Laois will be hitting the high note at the upcoming Laois School of Music and Music Generation Laois annual summer concert. Hosted by the Laois Arts Office which takes place on Tuesday, May 20 at the Dunamaise Arts Centre. Featuring the Junior and Senior Laois School of Music Orchestras and Flute Choir. The concert programme will also include Music Generation Laois harp and brass students as well as the Stampede Drumming Group. The organisers say the concert promises to be a wonderful mix of instruments and a great family event showcasing the variety of music tuition available in the Laois. Supported by Laois County Council, Laois Offaly ETB & Laois Partnership.

Youth Work Ireland Laois thanked members of the Portlaoise Pioneers Association who recently gave a cheque for €500 towrds funding for the Irish Youth Music Awards. At the presentaiton were Lena Connolly (Chairperson) Joe Thompson (Youthwork Ireland Laois), Paddy Lalor (Secretary) Jennifer McEvoy (PRO) Sean O’Neill (Youth Officer) and Jim Sheils (Youth Protection Officer).

Late Josie DUNNE
Condolences to the family of the late Josie Dunne of New Row, Portlaoise. Deeply regretted by her loving sister Eileen Brennan, brother Ger, The Brennan family New Row, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Reposed at Chapel of Rest, Portlaoise Regional Hospital. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
Late Nan MARUM
Condolences to the family of the late Nan Marum (née Quinn), 2 Old Knockmay Rd, Portlaoise, who died on May 10. Beloved wife of the late Jim and much loved mother of Veronica, Séamus, Pat, Martina and Catherine. Deeply regretted by sister, Sr Esther Quinn (Australia) extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at her daughter (Veronica Curran) residence on the Heath. Removal to SS Peter & Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass with interment afterwards in SS Peter & Paul’s cemetery.
