Portlaoise Macra

The AGM of Portlaoise Macra takes place on Friday the 30th of May at 9pm in the Portlaoise Macra Hall. All new and current members are more than welcome to attend. Portlaoise Macra would also like to thank everyone who supported our Easter Draw. Sunflower Day

Laois Hospice Foundation needs collection volunteers for National Sunflower Day on Friday June 6 to sell sunflowers at various outlets in Portlaoise. This is one of the main fundraisers organised by Laois Hospice Foundation and all monies collected locally are spent on hospice services in Laois. Laois BirdWatch

The next meeting of the Laois branch of BirdWatch Ireland will be held on Tuesday evening 27 May at the Portlaoise Parish Centre at 8pm, when photographer Nigel Beers Smith will talk about his experience during the summer of 2013 documenting the white tailed sea eagles of Mountshannon - the first pair to breed successfully in Ireland for over 100 years. The presentation will include a short video clip and selection of superb photographs, many of which appear in Nigel’s book on the Mountshannon eagles: “Ireland’s First”. The talk is open to everyone with an interest in wildlife. Entry is free but contributions are welcome.

Multicultural Street festival

Voices Across Cultures Street Market Festival takes place on Main St Portlaoise over the June Bank Holiday Weekend, May 31-June 1. Saturday 10am-8pm, Sunday 11am-6pm. There will be a distinctly international flavour in the air as everyone will enjoy over 40 stalls, plenty of live entertainment, childrens workshops, film shows in the Dunamaise theatre, cultural demonstrations all taking place in downtown Portlaoise. Diabetes meeting

Table quiz

A table quiz in aid of the Laois Offaly Mental Health Recovery Services takes place on Wednesday, May 28 in Peig’s bar at 8.30pm. Four persons per table €40. Raffle on the night. Please support.

‘Wild Creatures’ Exhibition of research and artwork by students from Scoil Bhride featuring snakes spiders and all manner of creepy crawly creatures on display this month. Youth Cafe

Run for Wheelchair

Cuisle Centre

Cuisle Cancer Support Centre notices. Women’s mini-marathon on June 2 - walk, jog or run for patient comfort at the centre. Sponsorship cards and bibs provided are available. There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on May 22. Winning nos: 2,7,18,19. The 17 match 3s won €59 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Bealtaine singing

The Sing for Joy Choir to be joined by members of the 10am church choir on Wednesday May 28 at the Parish Centre, at 10.45am. MC Maureen Culleton. Easy listening and familiar songs to sing along with or just sit and listen and enjoy a cuppa. Admission free.

Laois federation ICA walk on Sunday June 15 at the Cuisle Centre at 2 pm. Three members are travelling to An Grianán for Laois week. The Portlaoise guild hosts the federation meeting in September.

Fatima Thanks

People who donated to the Dominican nuns in Fatima have been thanked for their donations. A total of €480 was raised for the order which has a Portlaoise member, Sr Immaculate Heart. She has written to thank people for their generosity. This year people can donate to Maura O’Brien or Bernard Fitpatrick before June 11.

Late Liam DEEgan

Condolences to the family of the late Liam ‘Skipper’ Deegan of St John’s Sq., Portlaoise who died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Portlaoise Hospital on May 18. Deeply regretted by his wife Phillis, daughters Marita and Lisa and son Eugene, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Repose, Portlaoise Hospital. Removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Donations if desired to the Cuisle Centre.

Late James doyle

Condolences to the family of the late James Doyle of 133 St Bridget’s Place, Portlaoise and formerly of Dr Murphy Place who died suddenly on May 17. Much loved partner of Bridget and loving father of Jennifer deeply regretted by brother Joe, sisters Kathleen Mary and Ellen,The Kelly Family, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposing at his in home. Removal to St Peter and Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards at St Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.
