She is very committed to her local credit union and was prepared to take on the challenge. Under new standards of Fitness & Probity set by the Central Bank of Ireland all individuals must have the appropriate skills to govern the credit unions for the benefit of its members.

The Clients and Staff at the Day Care Centre New Road Portlaoise would like to acknowledge with thanks an anonymous donation of €400 received before Christmas. We also wish to thank most sincerely all those who contributed to the success of the cake and bric-a-brac sale held on November 24 ,and also the raffle in aid of the Christmas Party on the December 20. The proceeds will go towards the fund to replace the existing ill fitting timber framed single glazed windows and doors. We still need to raise around €5000 and some of the Staff at the Centre plan to do the Women’s mini marathon in June to raise funds for the refurbishment and we are looking for volunteers to join us. If you have not yet committed to a charity and would like to help us out please contact the Centre at 057 86 22944 for a Sponsorship Card.

On Tuesday, February 12 from 7.30pm - Frank Brennan from “Men Against Cancer” will talk about the road to recovery from Prostate Cancer.

AUTISM HELP

The Laois Offaly Families for Autism (LOFFA) group hosts a night to teach parents about a software programme Animated Language Learning (ALL) which is newly developed internet based software that has been specially developed for moderate to severe language impaired children. Founder of this Galway based start-up company Enda Dodd will speak at an information evening in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on Tuesday, February 5 at 8.15pm. Parents who have not yet found an effective or affordable service for their child are invited to find out more on the night.

MENS SHEDS

A “Mens Shed” public meeting is being held on Wednesday, February 6 at 8pm in the Parish Centre Portlaoise. A Men’s Shed is any community-based, non-commercial organisation which is open to all men where the primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where the men are able to gather and/or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other men and where the primary objective is to advance the physical and mental health and over all well- being of the participating men. Anyone interested in getting involved in this project or people wishing to hear more about the project should attend this meeting. All support for this community initiative is greatly appreciated.

There was no winner of the Lotto Jacpot when the draw was made on Thursday, January 24. Numbers drawn: 1,5,19,26. The 21 match 3s won €48 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Electrical recycling

There will be a free collection by WEEE Ireland of electrical items on Saturday, February 2 at the Laois County Council Motor Tax car park, Portlaoise, 10am-4pm. The day, which is supported by Laois County Council, allows people to get rid of any household electrical equipment and batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. There are other days around the county throughout February.

LOFFA table quiz

A table quiz in aid of the Laois Offaly Families for Austim(Loffa) takes place on Wednesday, February 24 in the Sally Gardens pub Portlaoise from pm. Table of four €40. Raffle also.

PARISH NOVENA

Portlaoise Parish Novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help runs from Wednesday, February 13 to April 10 Ash Wednesday for nine weeks every Wednesday at 7:30pm. Petitions will be remembered and prayed for throughout the nine weeks. Birdwatch

The Laois branch of BirdWatch Ireland will meet again on Wednesday evening 30 January at the Portlaoise Parish Centre starting at 8pm. This month we are delighted to welcome Alan Lauder, Chief Executive of BirdWatch Ireland, who will speak on “The future of Bird Conservation in Ireland”. Alan’s talk will be illustrated by a range of great images of Irish birds and will include some of the science behind bird conservation. It is open to everyone with an interest in birds. On Sunday, February 3 we have an outing to Rogerstown estuary in North Co. Dublin. The estuary attracts large numbers of waders and wildfowl during the winter and is also a prime spot for seeing a variety of birds of prey. We leave from County Hall Portlaoise at 9.30 am.

Lourdes

The Heath GAA Open Day

The Juvenile club will be hosting an Open Day for registration on February 10, at 11am. There will be fun games and coaching sessions on the day, and parents will have a chance to meet with team coaches for the coming year. We will have teams from U-6 up to U-16 in both boys and girls grades this year, so if you have children eligible, or know anyone who does, then you are most welcome at our clubhouse on February 10. Teen Spirit
