Macra talent

Rathdowney Macra hope to start practising for the National Talent Competition in early March. This consists of eight different events in which you can enter namely, disco dancing, solo instrumental, novelty act, solo singing, mastermind, set dancing, comedy or pop/folk/ballad group. This event is on in early April & we hope to have a few people in one or more of these events.

Best of luck to our team of Diarmaid Delaney, Billy Holland, James Barber & Ian Fitzgerald who along with a team from Mountmellick Macra represent Laois in the final of the Kerrygold Club Question Time in Limerick on March 22. Annual table quiz fundraiser on March 21 in O’Connells Pub Cullahill. Late Seamus CARROLL

Condolences to the family of the late Seamus Carroll, Kilbreedy, Rathdowney, who died on February 20 peacefully at Portlaoise regional hospital. Deeply regretted by his wife Kathleen, son’s Pat and Seamus, daughter Martina extended family, relatives and many friends. Reposed at O’Sullivan’s Funeral Home, Rathdowney. Removal to the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rathdowney for Funeral Mass followed by burial in Bealady Cemetery.

ST BRIGIDS CAMóGIE

New officers were elected at our AGM. Chairperson Danny Gorman, Vice Chair Eileen Sweeney, Secretary Carmel Fitzpatrick, Vice Secretary Trish Meagher, Treasurer Ann Cuss, Vice Treasurer Kathleen Tyne, PRP Ciaran Carroll, Register Ciaran Gorman.

Registration night for all ages is Saturday March 8 from 8-9pm in Rathdowney GAA rooms, followed by presentation night for U16’s. All players must be registered and paid up by March 31.

SNOOKER & BILLIARDS

CYMS held a juvenile pool tournament on Friday February 21. Congratulations to winner Arron Costigan and runners up Nathan Treacy, Alex Bowe and Conor Hancock.

The final of the O’Malley Cup was held on Wednesday February 26. Congratulations to winner Liam O Brien. We would like to pay special thanks to John O’Malley who presented the Cup on behalf of the O’Malley family. Thanks to Catherine Daly who had the Cup in pristine condition. Thanks to Pricilla and Carmel for the food and the catering.

We hope to start the next billiards tournament for the Maurice Holohan Memorial Cup soon, details to follow. Thanks to everyone in the community for their much valued support.

The CYMS will be holding a progressive 25 in Allen’s pub in Errill on Friday March 7 at 8.30pm. €10 per person, spot prizes and refreshments on the night. All welcome.

BINGO

Bingo is held every Tuesday Night at 8.30 in the Community Centre. Your support is appreciated.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Rathdowney Social Services will hold their AGM on Thursday March 6 at 8pm. We are looking for drivers for meals on wheels if you have a few hours to spare please phone Gina 087 2454722. Thanks to all our drivers who do wonderful work.

AWARE

The Aware Support Group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and other mood related conditions meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in St Peter and Pauls Parish Centre, Portlaoise. BOOK CLUB

Our next meeting is on Monday March 31 at 8pm in the library. This month’s book is Stoner by John Williams and the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. New members welcome.

ANGLERS

There will be fly fishing lessons in April. This will include advice, how to tie flies, castings etc. Free of charge, For more information contact Rory 087 2388064.

MUSEUM

The Donaghmore Workhouse and Agricultural Museum is open Monday to Friday 11am-5pm. Come and see for yourself what life was like in a real workhouse. Group tours are also very welcome here.
