A duck race will be held in the stream beside O’Reilly’s in Rathdowney on Sunday August 24, starting at 3pm. Ducks can be pre bought or bought on the day for €2. It will be great ‘quack’ and all funding goes towards helping to raise funds for Pieta House. Contact 0872388064 for more info.

The workhouse is hosting an event for Heritage Week on Sunday August 24 from 2-4.30pm. It will be about the Forgotten Famine People of Queen’s County (Laois), a film documentary on the Irish Famine based here in the County and its impact, and also a guided tour of the workhouse afterwards.

The library will host Irish History Live as part of National Heritage week on Wednesday August 27 at 10am. This is an interactive “Irish Live Show” with Michael Moylan, where children get to dress up in costume and use the museum quality replicas of Historical artefacts. A meeting was held for the Donaghmore Community Alert Group in the Swallows Quarter Centre on Friday night Aug 8. The purpose of the meeting was to form a community alert group in the Donaghmore area with initial objective to set up a text alert system. There was an attendance of over fifty people and advice and guidance was given from several people on the night. More will follow, and another meeting will be arranged.
The Aware Support Group for people experiencing depression, anxiety, stress and other mood related conditions meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm in St Peter and Pauls Parish Centre, Portlaoise. This service is free of charge, no referral is required and you do not need to book.

The Rathdowney Errill GAA annual race night will take place on Saturday August 23 in Thurles greyhound track.
Tickets available from all committee members at €10 which includes entry on the night. Prize money on the night will be €1,000. This guarantees to be a very enjoyable night for young and old. Your support would be greatly appreciated. First race takes place at 8pm sharp.
OSSORY CYCLING CLUB
The club meet every Tuesday night until the end of the summer months.
The club is reintroducing their A, B and Leisure group cycles. Cycles will commence at 7pm sharp. Each group will have its own team leader and each leader will pick a course that will suite their group.
We would like to welcome any new leisure cyclist to join on our cycles. The leisure cycle is guaranteed to be at a pace that will suite everybody in the group (Slow).
All are welcome to join us. Juveniles must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It is important that helmets must be worn at all times. No helmet, no cycle.
