THE LATE JOSEPH (JOE) MAHON

The death occurred on Thursday, July 17 of Joseph better known as Joe Mahon, Aughamaddock, Stradbally, Co. Laois, peacefully. Joe will be sadly missed by all his family, his very good neighbours and large circle of friends.

|His remains were reposing at the Presentation Chapel, Stradbally and following Requiem Mass on Saturday his remains were interred in Oakvale Cemetery.

STEAM RALLY 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The year 2014 is a special year for the National Steam Rally as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Over 20,000 visitors will descend on Stradbally, Co. Laois, to celebrate with young and old alike and watch numerous steam and vintage steam engines, cars, tractors and other vintage machinery in full steam. There will be plenty of trade stands selling products from auto jumble through to vintage fashion, with some even offering cookery demonstrations. Children of all ages can enjoy a steam train ride through the woodlands of the Cosby Estate and can revel in the carnival atmosphere. Come along to the National Steam Rally this August to join in a very special celebration. There might even be a slice of vintage cake for you!

STEAM RALLY PHOTO EXHIBITION

This year we celebrate our 50th Steam Rally. The Rally Committee are holding a Photo Exhibition on the August weekend in the Art House. We are appealing to the local people who may have photos of steam engines, steam trains, people taken at the rally over the years or any memorabilia i.e. Programmes, tickets, etc from past rallies to display them in the exhibition. Your photo can be copied by us so you hold on to your original. For details contact Tony Fenlon 087-9911219 affter 4pm any evening.

STRADBALLY TOWN AFC ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

The Stradbally Town AFC annual Golf Classic takes place on the Heath Golf Course on Friday, August 1. It will be played in a 3 Ball scramble format and a team of 3 players is €90 with prizes for GUI and Non GUI players. Refreshments, Finger food and Prizes to be presented later that evening. BUS TO CLONFERT

A bus will be travelling to Clonfert for a day of prayer and healing (theme ‘Family Tree Mass) on Saturday, August 2 leaving Stradbally at 8.30am sharp. Phone Eileen 0598625215 or 8625902.

SUMMER ARTS

CYCLE CHALLENGE

Sunday August 31st all roads will lead to Fisherstown Ballybrittas for the running of the 100km cycle challenge others events include a 50 km cycle and a short run for families and individuals , high nellies also welcome. Start and finish at Fishermans Inn where refreshments will be served to all afterwards further info phone 0872654001.

VICARSTOWN RECREATIONAL GROUP

Bus will leave from outside Creans Lounge, on Sunday morning, July 27 at 9.15am sharp. In the event of someone being late, the bus will only wait 10mins and will depart for Carlingford, Ballymascallion Hotel.

LAOIS ARTHOUSE

At the Laois Arthouse, Stradbally – ‘Sitting’ is the title given to the residency, where artist Nick Miller painted portraits in the Laois Arthouse. The exhibition of his work is on view now until September 1, Monday to Friday, 1pm-5pm and Saturday from 10am-1pm and Sunday from 2pm-5pm.

VINTAGE DISPLAY AND PARTY

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Steam Rally, the Napper Tandy are holding a vintage display and party in the back yard of the pub, there will be steam engines, lanz bulldogs, and various other vintage machines, there will be a pig on the spit barbecue, live bands playing from 6pm – all this takes place on Saturday, August 3.

LAOIS LIVERPOOL SUPPORTERS CLUB

Was a great attendance at the Liverpool Supporters club AGM. Officers returned were chairman Billy Doogue, secretary JP Cushen and treasurer Larry Keenan. Next outing is September 13 for the Villa game in the Napper Tandys.
