MAGICAL EXHIBITION

The Arthouse Gallery, Stradbally will host a magical exhibition in October by a young local artist Gemma Lalor from Portlaoise. The exhibition will be officially launched on Thursday, October 2 at 6pm by well known musician and songwriter Adela Meally.

GAA 125th ANNIVERSARY

Stradbally GAA are celebrating 125 years this year. To mark the occasion the club are holding a variety of activities starting on Friday, August 22 with the launch of their Strategic Review Plan in the clubhouse. On Saturday evening there’s a match between past and present players followed by food and entertainment in the back of the Napper Tandys and on Sunday they start with a parade from the pitch at 11am followed by mass and activities in the pitch from 12.30pm. Food and entertainment in Dunnes from 8pm.

STRADBALLY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

A meeting of the Stradbally Neighbourhood Watch will be held on Monday, August 25 in St Mary’s Hall commencing at 7.30pm. A full attendance is expected.

COMMUNITY GAMES UPDATE

Friday, August 22 sees the start of weekend two of the national finals in Athlone. On Saturday morning the u13 relay team take to the track - Jenny O Connor Murphy, Sasha Kemmy, Canice Whearty, Ciaran O Neill, Jessica Hewitt and Rurai Coss. The u14 drama team will perform on Saturday evening - Kayla Darcy, Aoife Horgan, Jill Cushin and Orla, Dawn and Sarah Hennessy. Model makers Jack Luttrell, Kevin Sheehy and Eimer Devoy will be in action on Saturday and Sunday morning. Sean Sheridan runs the u16 marathon and Blake Kemmy runs the u10 100m. Last year’s All Ireland gold medal Irish dancers will be in action on Sunday afternoon - Orla Sheridan, Grace Scully, Chloe Mills, Bronagh Scully, Grainne McCaul and Sinead Larkin have high hopes of a medal following on from last year’s success. Team managers for the weekend are Zandra Horgan, Kathleen Sheridan and Claire O Neill, with David Kemmy and Stephen Whearty looking after the athletes on the track. The best of luck to all competing.

HERITAGE WEEK UPDATE FOR STRABALLY

As part of Heritage Week, the following events have been organised in the area:

A Night with the Stars, August 23, 8pm – 10.30pm. Amateur astronomers from the Midlands Astronomy Club will present astronomy talks in the library and, weather permitting, bring telescopes to observe the sky from the

Courthouse Square.

Railway trips, August 23/24, 1pm – 4pm. Details Ireland’s longest established Heritage railway, running through the woodland surrounding Stradbally Hall Estate.

Harry the Hedgehog visits Stradbally Library, August 26, 2pm – 3pm.

Talk on Stradbally Market House, August 27, 7pm – 8pm, in Portlaoise Library.

MEALS ON WHEELS UPDATE

Tickets are on sale for the annual raffle with €700 in prize money. Draw for prizes will take place in St Joseph’s Hall on Saturday, August 23 at 7pm.

CYCLE CHALLENGE

Sunday August 31, all roads will lead to Fisherstown Ballybrittas for the running of the 100km cycle challenge others events include a 50km cycle and a short run for families and individuals, high nellies also welcome. Start and finish at Fishermans Inn where refreshments will be served to all afterwards further info phone 0872654001.

LAOIS LIVERPOOL SUPPORTERS CLUB

Next outing planned for the club to meet on Saturday, September 13 for the Aston Villa game at 5.30pm in the Napper Tandys that evening. Complimentary food and draw on the night.

VICARSTOWN VINTAGE CLUB ANNUAL ROAD RUN

The Vicarstown Vintage Club annual road run, threshing and family day takes place on Sunday, August 24. The road run starts at 12.30pm. Proceeds of the event goes to Saplings School for Children with Autism, Graiguecullen.
