World War I memorials in Laois towns

Work is well underway in Portarlington and Mountmellick to mark the involvement of local people in World War I.

The 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War occurs this year and to mark the event an ecumenical evening of remembrance in Portarlington will be held on August 29 as part of Heritage Week 2014.

The organisers say this is not intended in any way to glorify war but to help us appreciate the horror and suffering of those men from Portarlington who went to fight in the “war to end all wars”. To date 55 local men have been identified as having died in the war and it is possible that there are others whose names are not currently known. An exhibition of artefacts associated with the war is also being arranged.

To help with information, or lending artefacts for the exhibition contact David Orford at 057 8623852 or Rev Leslie Stevenson.

Meanwhile, Mountmellick’s Ger Lynch will give a talk on ‘Mountmellick and the Great War’ in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, June 19 at 8.30pm.

He is part of a committee which is working on a project to commemorate those who died. The talk is part of the annual programme of talks organised by Laois Heritage Society. Further details from Teddy Fennelly, teddyfennelly@hotmail.com.
