Two students from Mountmellick Community School attended the EU Youth Parliament’s Leinster Regional Session 2014 which was held recently in the Maldron Hotel, Portlaoise.
Cathal Grennan and Daniel Williams both attended the event which took place on the weekend of January 24 to 26.
On the first day the students were separated into committees and played icebreaker games to feel comfortable with their teammates who came from all over Leinster.
On the second day the committees were giving a real problem faced by the EU. It was their job to come up with a solution to the problem. They then wrote their solution upon an official EU document called a resolution.
A general assembly took place on the last day. This was a mock up of an EU parliament meeting and the students had to follow official protocol. MP Mairead McGuinness opened the session.
The committees then debated their topics and attempted to pass each of their resolutions. This session lasted all day and the students were obliged to wear formal dress.
Cathal and Daniel said that it was a great and unique experience for all.
