Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half they had built up a healthy ten point lead at the break, but Ballyfin showed all of their battl ing qualities to get back into it.

The first score of the game arrived after just three minutes, with full-forward Matthew Peacock sent over a nice point. The next few minutes belonged to Abbeyleix’ talented attacker Aaron Brennan, as he hit two goals to put his side in the driving seat.

The strong wind was making it difficult for Ballyfin to get out of their own half, and they were hit by a third goal soon after when Eoin Egan cracked a great shot to the top corner. Ballyfin finally got their first score of the half in injury time, but it was worth waiting for as Luke Rigney scored a superb goal to leave it 3-2 to 1-0 at half time.

Ballyfin would go on to dominate the second half, and they began firing in some all-important goals. They scored three without reply, from Peter Carroll (2) and Alan Connolly to get themselves back on level terms at 4-0 to 3-3, but they couldn’t push ahead.

Aaron Brennan struck his third goal to put Abbeyleix back in front and they held firm to final whistle.
