All Ireland Cic Saor open to all

Fancy yourself as the next Niall McNamee, Colm Cooper or Bernard Brogan? Well now is your chance to pit yourself against the best with the inaugural All-Ireland Cic Saor competition set to take place on Saturday September 8 at the Dundalk Young Irelands GAA Club.

Competitors from 18 to 80 will descend on the Louth venue, with thousands of Euro in prize money up for grabs as some of Ireland’s top GAA stars such as Armagh’s Oisin McConville, Meath’s Joe Sheridan and Louth’s All-Star Paddy Keenan will mix it with GAA legends such as Dublin’s Barney Rock and club players from around the country in order to be crowned the Cic Saor King.

There’s six rounds, with the first four rounds consisting of five pre-positioned spot-kick stations. In the first round players kick from the spot-kick stations and if they kick five-in-a-row, they advance to the second round.

The second round involves players kicking from the same spot-kick stations, but they are pitted against the clock. The fastest percentage will be determined on the day, based on ‘the cut’ idea used in Golf.

For Round 3, the kicking stations will move out 20 metres, but with players kicking from the same angles. Each kicking station will have a kicking value and the combined value is 25. Again a ‘cut’ principle will come into play.

Anyone outside this figure will be given the opportunity to re-enter to see if they can make the cut.

In Round 4 the pay-out structure kicks in and it is hoped to pay out 10% of the total field.

Round 5 is a semi-final which is a head-to-head shootout, with three lives and then the final follows the same structure as the semi-final.

All-Ireland Cic Saor Chairman Adrian O’Donoghue says this is an important event for the Dundalk Young Irelands club and that everyone with a sporting interest should get involved.

“We want to promote this to every corner of the country,” he said. “This is not directed solely at the Elite players, it’s directed at everybody who can kick a ball. It’s directed at everybody and we want as many people as possible to take part in this to make it a fantastic event annually for everyone. We are calling on everybody from 18 upwards to former players to get involved. We want a mixture of county players and the rest of the world.”

Louth’s Paddy Keenan is hoping to make amends for a disappointing Summer and take an All-Ireland title in Dundalk in September.

“It’s not too often that Louth men have a chance to win an All-Ireland,” he said. “This competition is very well run and we’ll give it a crack. I know there are a lot of lads between club and county players who are interested in taking part.”

The event will be beamed all over the world Live on the day on www.cicsaor.ie from the four pitches at Dundalk Young Irelands.

Participants must register on www.cicsaor.ie by September 1st next.
