All square after local derby

Clonaslee St Manman’s and Rosenallis made the short trip to Mountmellick for their highly anticipated semi-final on Saturday last, and with the bragging rights up for grabs in this local derby it was always going to be a well-contested fixture, although few would have predicted a draw even after extra time.

In what was a hugely competitive first half, and indeed the whole game, it was Rosenallis that opened the scoring after two minutes with Ronan Murray converting his first of what was to be many frees for the afternoon.
St Manman’s responded from the resulting puck-out with wing-back, Conor McEvoy, plucking the ball out of the air before launching the ball straight over the crossbar from the half way line to level the proceedings.
Rosenallis began to put their stamp on the game and claimed the next three points over a relatively slow fifteen minutes spell with Ronan Murray proving clinical from placed balls as he brought his tally to four points.
Obviously unhappy to find themselves three points down Clonaslee quickly set about dismantling the Rosenallis lead, and did so with one clean strike from Sean Lewis to set the sides level, before Conor Hyland put Manman’s ahead for the first time in the game with a well-taken point.
Declan Walsh drew the sides level yet again with his first point of the day, before Ronan Murray hit his stride to fire over three consecutive frees to push Rosenallis back in front approaching the half time whistle.
Will Young cut the deficit to two, before Conor Hyland’s raised the green flag on the stroke of half time with his long range free creeping into the back of the net to give them a narrow one point lead going in at the break.
Clonaslee restarted the half in devastating fashion with PJ Fitzpatrick rattling the back of the net just two minutes into the half. Rosenallis took it in their stride and hit-back with a goal of their own five minutes later from Brian Fitzpatrick, and then a brace of frees from Ronan Murray swayed the one point lead in their favour.
Ciaran Hyland’s free leveled the proceedings shortly after, before Clonaslee raised the green flag for the third time in the game with Padraig Carroll claiming the goal. As the game approached the final whistle Ronan Murray fired another brace before Brian Fitzpatrick brought his tally to 1-1 to leave the game all square entering into injury time.
PJ Fitzpatrick looked to have sealed a late winner for St Manman’s, but a dramatic free from Ronan Murray sent the game to extra time. A tense period of extra time ensued, with St Manman’s claiming the equalising point with the last puck of the day to send the game to a replay.
