Abbeyleix weren’t given much of a shout in this one, as they took on the aging but wily experience of Castletown-Slieve Bloom, but in truth they could and perhaps should have taken that scalp as the two sides played out a draw in O’Moore Park on Saturday night.

Laois Senior Hurling Championship

Abbeyleix 0-14

Castletown-S’Bloom 1-11

It was far from a classic, and neither side look to have what it takes to trouble the big guns for this year’s Senior championship, but it will be the more fancied Castletown side who will have left the happier after surviving a gallant Abbeyleix challenge.

They will have to go head to head again in the replay, and if that means that Abbeyleix might be able to name a few key players who missed out on this one, they could well go one better. Castletown-Slieve Bloom were poor for most of this game, and were it not for the timely influence of live-wire forward Brendan Reddin they could well have been dumped out of the championship race.

See this week’s Leinster Express for full report on this game and all the other important games played last week in Laois.
