A second-half where they outscored Shanahoe by eight points to one saw Ballyfin through to the next round of the Senior B Hurling Championship in a windswept O’Moore Park on Friday.

With the strong wind blowing straight across the field from the stand side, shooting was difficult for both sides but Ballyfin adapted better to the conditions.
Shanahoe were quickly out of the blocks with Darragh Cripps and Leigh Bergin scoring inside the first two minutes. Gareth Dunphy pulled one back and then he struck for his first goal as he appeared to get the merest of touches to a long ball from James Finn past John Clooney.
There was no doubt that Dunphy was the scorer of the second goal as the Shanahoe defence was opened up and the corner-forward drilledhome from close range.
Points from Dunphy and Finn follwed but Shanahoe fought their way back with an excellent goal from Shane Cuddy and points from Anthony Kirwan and Darragh Cripps had them back within one. Ballyfin however finished the half with a brace from Eamon Duff.
After waiting ten minutes for the first score in the second-half, Ballyfin rattled off four in three minutes to make the decisive break. Shanahoe had the chance to get back in the game with a penalty but Leigh Bergin’s well hit shot was saved by John Joe McHugh.
Ballyfin kept the scoreboard ticking over and by the 53rd minute led by 2-13 to 1-5. Shanahoe eventually scored their only point of the second-half late in the game through Anthony Kirwan and their day was summed up in the closing minutes when two 21 metre frees from Leigh Bergin were saved on the line.
